Hiroshige Ando Woodblock Japanese Framed Print Color Walking in Rain 1830s 21 x 15 (glass framed size). 14 x 9.5 (w/o frame size, print only); Good condition : Frame has a couple scratches, notches and paper behind frame some tearing due to age ; Wood Frame possibly old bamboo is handmade looks sealed (see all photos). The possible original old paper backing is very delicate to the touch and the possible original frame looks to be hand sealed. As we are not professional art dealers, trying to remove the paper/cloth hand drawn print inside would damage the frame and paper. So we are unable to remove the woodblock to take more close-up photos. Was born Ando Tokutaro in 1797 in Edo (now Tokyo), Japan. After becoming an orphan at the age of 13, he began studying with revered artist Utagawa Toyohiro, and at the age of 15, he changed his name to Utagawa Hiroshige. He is best known for his impressive series of landscape woodblock prints. Among his most notable works: Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji, ” circa 1831; “The 55 Stations of the Tokaido, ” circa 1833-34; “Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kiso Road, ” circa 1835; and “One Hundred Views of Edo, circa 1856. He finished “Views of Edo” just two years prior to his death from cholera. Similar to Hokusai, Hiroshige’s artwork appealed to fellow revered artists, including Van Gogh. Thank You for Supporting Us. Vintage Kitagawa Utamaro Bijin Okubi-e Japanese Woodblock Print w/ Wooden Japanese Frame. From a collector of Japanese Woodblocks, please check the the other listing (photo #10) from same estate. Well kept in Japanese handcrafted wooden frame with Japanese inscription photo no. 7 at the back of wood made specifically for the the artwork. Japanese Inscriptions at the left side when translated includes the “Ministry of Tsuki Women of Utamaro”. 1753 – 31 October 1806 was a Japanese artist. He is one of the most highly regarded designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings, and is best known for his bijin okubi-e “large-headed pictures of beautiful women” of the 1790s. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects. Utamaro Kitagawa was born in 1753 in Edo (today Tokyo) and died in 1806. He is considered the leading Japanese printmaker and painter of bijin. His original name was Ichitaro Kitagawa. Utamaro started his career as a student of the master painter Toriyama Sekien. Utamaro’s early known art works are ukiyo-e prints for the kabuki theater published under the name of Utagawa Toyoaki. Great condition, colors are well kept and vivid, no tears nor breaks. Expected yellowing from vintage wear. As any vintage piece there are changes expected hard to describe and better seen in the photos, please check as they are integral to the description.
