Vintage Kitagawa Utamaro Bijin Okubi-e Japanese Woodblock Print w/ Wooden Japanese Frame. From a collector of Japanese Woodblocks, please check the the other listing (photo #10) from same estate. Well kept in Japanese handcrafted wooden frame with Japanese inscription photo no. 7 at the back of wood made specifically for the the artwork. Japanese Inscriptions at the left side when translated includes the “Ministry of Tsuki Women of Utamaro”. 1753 – 31 October 1806 was a Japanese artist. He is one of the most highly regarded designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings, and is best known for his bijin okubi-e “large-headed pictures of beautiful women” of the 1790s. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects. Utamaro Kitagawa was born in 1753 in Edo (today Tokyo) and died in 1806. He is considered the leading Japanese printmaker and painter of bijin. His original name was Ichitaro Kitagawa. Utamaro started his career as a student of the master painter Toriyama Sekien. Utamaro’s early known art works are ukiyo-e prints for the kabuki theater published under the name of Utagawa Toyoaki. Great condition, colors are well kept and vivid, no tears nor breaks. This is a very rare print depicting a busy Japanese city street. Circa late 18th century. Utamaro was a Japanese artist. Hes one of the most highly regarded designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings, is best known for his pictures of women, cityscapes. He also produce nature studies particular illustrated books of insects. He produced over 2000 prints and it was one of the few artists to achieve fame throughout Japan in his lifetime. Granted to your attention amazing original woodblock print COURTESAN AND HER MAIKO by great artist KITAGAWA TSUKIMARO in 1806. He was painter and print artist, Kitagawa Utamaro’s best pupil. He began designing prints of beautiful women using the name Kikumaro. From 1804 changed his name to Tsukimaro. 1820 ceased to design prints, painting instead hanging scrolls of beauties in a style influenced by the Maruyama-Shijo school, which he signed’Kansetsu’. His last dated work is an illustration for a’kyoka’ anthology published in 1836. Full large oban size (15 1/4 X 10 1/2) untrimmed, unframed. This print printed in “aizuri-e”, the colors are great. The term aizuri-e (Japanese: “blue printed picture”) usually refers to Japanese woodblock prints that are printed entirely in blue. This print is in very good condition, reinforced by professional restorer using thin japanese washi paper on the back because of old age. Depicting two Beauties, one is cortesan and another one her attendant. Kitagawa Utamaro Japanese: ; c. 1753 31 October 1806 was a Japanese artist. He is one of the most highly regarded designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings, and is best known for his bijin kubi-e “large-headed pictures of beautiful women” of the 1790s. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects. Little is known of Utamaro’s life. His work began to appear in the 1770s, and he rose to prominence in the early 1790s with his portraits of beauties with exaggerated, elongated features. He produced over 2000 known prints and was one of the few ukiyo-e artists to achieve fame throughout Japan in his lifetime. In 1804 he was arrested and manacled for fifty days for making illegal prints depicting the 16th-century military ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and died two years later. This print is depicting the Maiko with two Musicians on parade during traditional Niwaka festival in Yoshiwara. From the series Seiro Niwaka. Full oban size (15 X 10) untrimmed, unmounted, unframed.
