Vintage Kitagawa Utamaro Bijin Okubi-e Japanese Woodblock Print w/ Wooden Japanese Frame. From a collector of Japanese Woodblocks, please check the the other listing (photo #10) from same estate. Well kept in Japanese handcrafted wooden frame with Japanese inscription photo no. 7 at the back of wood made specifically for the the artwork. Japanese Inscriptions at the left side when translated includes the “Ministry of Tsuki Women of Utamaro”. 1753 – 31 October 1806 was a Japanese artist. He is one of the most highly regarded designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings, and is best known for his bijin okubi-e “large-headed pictures of beautiful women” of the 1790s. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects. Utamaro Kitagawa was born in 1753 in Edo (today Tokyo) and died in 1806. He is considered the leading Japanese printmaker and painter of bijin. His original name was Ichitaro Kitagawa. Utamaro started his career as a student of the master painter Toriyama Sekien. Utamaro’s early known art works are ukiyo-e prints for the kabuki theater published under the name of Utagawa Toyoaki. Great condition, colors are well kept and vivid, no tears nor breaks. Harugasumi edo no Tatehiki. 30 June 1835 1 July 1900 was a Japanese woodblock print artist. Talented as a child, at about thirteen he became a student of Tokyo’s then-leading print maker, U. His deep appreciation and knowledge of kabuki. Drama led to his production primarily of ukiyo-e. Actor-prints, which are woodblock prints of kabuki actors and scenes from popular plays of the time. An alcoholic and womanizer, Kunichika also portrayed women deemed beautiful (Bijinga) contemporary social life, and a few landscapes and historical scenes. He worked successfully in the Edo period, and carried those traditions into the Meiji period. To his contemporaries and now to some modern art historians, this has been seen as a significant achievement during a transitional period of great social and political change in Japan’s history.
