Extremely rare Haku Maki. Ox print from the Animal Song Collection created by Haku Maki. The red Lantern Gallery in Kyoto distributed this collection in 1968 of the 12 animals of the zodiac of which 50 copies of each animal were made. This specific print is of the ox and exceedingly rare, there are almost no other copies of this version found for sale on the internet. The background colors are primarily purple and black and the main scene is of two large characters in black with one circling a red circle in the top character and the other a green circle in the bottom character. The bottom right has Haku Maki’s block signature in orange. In pencil from left to right it seems to read “17/50″ as in number 17 out of the 50 of this version created. Next in pencil is says Animal Song. Being the symbol for ox. At the far right is also in pencil “Haku Maki”. The actual print measurements are 17 in by 17 in on thick paper. On the back you can see the shapes and characters pressed through into the paper as well as a small sticker in the right hand corner that says HM6, presumably for Haku Maki. The photos are a very accurate representation of the condition of this print. I know that the condition of this piece is of the utmost importance so in order to keep it safe in transit I put the print between two pieces of thick hard foam board to keep it from bending. Then the whole thing is wrapped in another layer of cardboard to keep the inner most layer even more protected. It’s firm enough that someone would have to try with purpose to actually bend it so that it stays in existing condition. If there is anything else please feel free to contact me. Artist: Urushibara Mokuchu (Yoshijiro Urushihara). Title: Horse (Rearing / Turning Horse). Medium: Traditional Japanese woodblock print (mokuhanga). Style: Sumi-e inspired ink woodblock. Signature/Seal: Red artist seal (hanko) + signature in lower right. Subject: Stylized horse in dynamic motion. Offered here is an original vintage woodblock print by Urushibara Mokuchu, one of the most respected Japanese printmakers of the early 20th century. Best known for his collaborations with European artists and his mastery of traditional Japanese printing techniques, Mokuchu created a series of expressive horse prints during the 1920s-1930s. This piece depicts a turning horse, captured in flowing sumi-ink lines that highlight the artist’s skill in combining minimalism with bold, rhythmic brushwork. The print includes Mokuchu’s red artist seal and a signature, consistent with his authenticated works. The imagery is powerful, elegant, and highly collectible – a strong example of Japanese modernist woodblock art. Good vintage condition for its age. Some edge wear and toning from age (see photos). A small portion of old mounting tape visible at the top edge. No major rips or tears. Image area remains strong and displays beautifully. Please review all photos for details. Please feel free to message me with any questions!
