Original HIROSHIGE Japanese Woodblock Print Tokaido Moonlight Edo Akasaka 1830s. This beautiful original woodblock print’Akasaka’ is number 37 from Hiroshige’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido. It is the only moonlit woodblock in the entire series and shows the village with people and a horse under a full moon and trees. This series-published by Sanoki-was known as the Kyoka edition due to the humorous poem on each woodblock. The woodblock is unframed. The woodblock measures approximately 8 1/2 inches x 6 1/2 inches (1/2 block Tokaido). The woodblock is in very good condition with strong colors and good bleed through. There is a little very light yellowing down the lower right edge. One pin prick hole in the center top which looks to be a fault in the paper. The reverse has some old tape to the edges. A Rare Japanese Woodblock Print by Hiroshige from Series 69 Stations of the Kisokaido Ca. 14 1/2 x 9 1/2 ins. (36.8 x 24.2 cms) The series is, with the celebrated 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Hiroshige’s master piece. There are 70 designs in the series, 23 of which are by Eisen. The present design is no. The series was published ca. 1835-38 by Hoeido for the first part and Kinjudo for the second part, the present example is by Kinjudo. Details of the series and design can be found on Google. The present example has very good colour, (the red seals are a little faded), and impression and is an early printing. The right and left margins have been trimmed off and replaced. There is a repair adjacent to the right hand edge on the yellow colour and possibly another on the grey ground just above and to the left of the signature. The print has been lightly backed, probably some time ago in Japan as the minor worm track at the bottom left has also gone through the backing. As can clearly be seen on the photographs there is light foxing, particularly on the yellow area to the right and on the margins. There condition problems can be rectified by an expert restorer. Viewing the print against the light does not reveal any other significant repairs. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS AN ORIGINAL PRINTING NOT A FACSIMILE OR REPRINT. PLEASE INSPECT PHOTOS CAREFULLY. We guarantee each item to be from the period as described. Our guarantee has no time limit. We do not sell for other dealers, we sell only our own stock. Nowadays many sellers, especially internet sellers, show items for sale not belonging to them, either because they have no actual stock of their own or they are advertising items, often of unknown origin, for clients on a commission basis. Such sellers often have very limited, highly conditional, or non-existent guarantees. With 45 years experience of Asian Art & Antiques with retail premises here in Brighton and a worldwide reputation second to none, we are pleased to offer our customers our guarantee without time limit. A genuine antique is, of course, genuine for all time and not just for seven, fourteen or thirty days and so sellers not offering such a guarantee as ours should possibly be avoided.
