The area of the woodblock print showing is 13.5″ long by 8.75″ wide. Framed it is 18.5″ by 14.5″. This is the middle sheet of a triptych and thus, technically, only one third of the full work of art. The date stated on the back refer to the FIRST Toyokuni, who was not as prolific or as commercially successful as his descendant. We have not removed the print from its mount. The margins that surround the image are usually printed with publisher’s seals and censor’s stamps, all of which help to locate the impression very accurately and we have not attempted to remove the woodblock from the frame to see if this information is still intact. This woman is properly referred to as a “Bijin”…. Which refers to a beautiful young woman.
