Antique Japanese Woodblock Print Beauties on Beach by Kitagawa Fujimaro c. Presented is a beautiful Japanese full oban-size woodblock print created by the renowned artist of the late Edo period, Kitagawa Fujimaro c. He is known as a late follower of the famous artist Kitagawa Utamaro. Though little is known about his life, he specialized in painting beautiful women (bijin-ga), developing a distinct style with slender faces and expressive eyes, often depicting courtesans and scenes of daily life, with his works found in major museums like the Tokyo National Museum and British Museum. The print was made using the Japanese woodblock technique and hand-colored. The print is backed on a paper so it’s hard to tell when exactly it was printed. However, the hand-coloring suggests it could be Fujimaro’s life time printing. AUTHOR: Kitagawa Fujimaro TITLE: “Three Ladies on a Beach” or “Beauties of Fitamiura” CREATED: c. 1820s – 1830s PAPER.
