The scene depicts boats in harbor at dusk with tall masts and sails silhouetted against a warm gradient sky, with Koitsu’s signature crisp linework and beautiful water reflections. This print is block-signed “Koitsu” and bears the artist’s red seal in the lower right, consistent with authenticated impressions of this design. Overview: Up for sale is this stunning woodblock print, “Twilight at Imamiya Street” by Japanese print artist, Ishiwata Koitsu. This print was initially published in 1932. This appears to be a somewhat later edition (likely 1950s). An absolute classic and one of the most beautiful Japanese prints ever made. Very difficult to find. Print is in very good condition. Margins appear to be slightly trimmed. Measurements: Print measures approximately 14.25 inches high x 9.75 inches wide. An original vintage Japanese woodblock print by the artist Koitsu Tsuchiya. Senso-ji (, Kinryu-zan Senso-ji) is an ancient Buddhist temple located in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan. It is Tokyo’s oldest temple, and one of its most significant. Formerly associated with the Tendai sect of Buddhism, it became independent after World War II. Adjacent to the temple is a five-story pagoda, the Asakusa Shinto shrine. The Sensoji Kannon temple is dedicated to Kannon Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva of compassion, and is the most widely visited spiritual site in the world with over 30 million visitors annually. Title “Kinryûzan Temple at Asakusa (Asakusa Kinryûzan)”. Print is glued down to the board. Colors are vibrant and pure, no rips. The print is truly amazing! Koitsu Tsuchiya’s prints immortalize Japan’s scenic beauty. Through subtle effects of light and shadow, Koitsu endowed his work with an aura of bewitching beauty. Born in 1870 outside Hamamatsu, his given name was Koichi. At the age of 15, he moved to Tokyo to study woodblock printing under Matsuzaki, a carver for the ukiyo-e master Kiyochika Kobayashi. However, he soon left Matsuzaki and became a student of Kiyochika himself. For 19 years, Koitsu lived in Kiyochika’s home, studying the art of Japanese woodblock printing. His first prints were war scenes of the Sino-Japanese war (1894-95). He later worked as a lithographer. In 1931, a chance meeting with the publisher Watanabe changed the course of his career. From that time on, Koitsu Tsuchiya specialized in Japanese landscape prints in the Shin Hanga style.
