Spring Snow Kyoto Maruyama. Please check the photo. Title / Spring Snow, Maruyama, Kyoto. Dimensions / 43 x 28.5 cm. Printed in 1935, Doi print edition. Tsuchiya Koitsu was an ukiyo-e artist and printmaker active from the Meiji to Showa periods. He produced works in a style of pictorial expression known as koranga (ray painting) used by his master Kobayashi Kiyochika, as well as nihonga (hand paintings) and shinpanga (new woodblock prints). Although he lived and studied painting at Kobayashi Kiyochika’s house for many years, he did not produce many works because he had to do a lot of housework and chores in place of his master. However, he is known as a popular artist for his elegant use of color and delicate expression, which he inherited from his master. International Buyers – Please Note. Condition: antique Please check the photo. Detail : Slight soiling on reverse / Published by Doi hangaten. This artwork depicts Sankeien Garden in Yokohama. The three-storied pagoda of the previous Toumyo-Ji Temple can be seen in the west. The depiction of the night cherry blossoms shimmering on the surface of the water in the twilight is impressive. Since TSUCHIYA Koitsu was the youngest pupil of Kiyochika, he was like a family of Kiyochika. He assisted Kiyochika’s artworks and also did housework, for instance, babysitting. In 1931, he met Watanabe Shozaburo, the most famous Shin-Hanga publisher, at the exhibition on the 16th year of Kiyochika’s death. Watanabe offered him to make Shin-Hanga works, Koitsu joined and created some works and exhibited “Night cherry blossom at Gion” and “Moonlit Evening at Osaka Castle” at the 3rd exhibition of Modern print which was sponsored by Watanabe.
