Japanese Woodblock Print Of Totsuka Station On Tokaido Road Edo Period Style

Length: 18.5 inches. Height: 14.5 inches. This exquisite Japanese woodblock print captures a vibrant scene at Totsuka Station, one of the 53 stations along the historic Tokaido Road, which connected Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto. The print showcases traditional Edo period attire, with figures depicted in dynamic poses as they engage in conversation and prepare for their journey. The background reveals a picturesque village setting, complete with thatched roofs and a serene landscape, exemplifying the beauty of rural Japan during this era. The woodblock technique, a time-honored art form in Japan, involves carving intricate designs into wood, inking the surface, and pressing it onto paper. This method allows for multiple prints to be created from a single block, preserving the artist’s work and making it accessible to a wider audience.

STORE CLOSING APRIL 15. HI and thx for viewing my listings of Japanese woodblock prints and related items. This listing is for a Japanese print by the artist Shiro Kasamatsu. Titled Flat Fish and dates to 1957. Very good vintage condition- image area 9 3/8″ x 14 3/8″ – sheet larger. 53 – this would be a first edition of this print. This would be an interesting time in the artist’s life as he began self-publishing his works and his themes moved from landscapes to “studies”. The print was previously framed using UV protective glass so no mat burn or fade. This is one of several Kasamatsu prints I currently offer for sale. But remember, this store is closing April 15. Please see images for all condition related matters – see last image for measurements. Please, view my customer comments.
