Rare Old Japanese Woodblock Kitagawa Utamaro Courtesan with Elaborate Coiffure

Offered here is this rare old Japanese woodblock print of “A Courtesan with an Elaborate Coiffure” by Kitagawa Utamaro. The original work by the artist was produced in the late 1700s. This particular print appears to be from a re-carved edition, possibly published by Fusui Gabo in the early 1900s. This is based on research and comparisons, however, and I have not removed the print from the frame to look for additional markings. The overall condition is excellent. The print is very clean with even tones, fine clean lines, and deep, crisp impressions. The shimmering background adds even more appeal to this piece. Measurements within the mat are approximately 9.5 by 14.25 inches and the frame’s outer dimensions are approximately 14.25 by 19.25 inches.
