Extremely rare Haku Maki. Ox print from the Animal Song Collection created by Haku Maki. The red Lantern Gallery in Kyoto distributed this collection in 1968 of the 12 animals of the zodiac of which 50 copies of each animal were made. This specific print is of the ox and exceedingly rare, there are almost no other copies of this version found for sale on the internet. The background colors are primarily purple and black and the main scene is of two large characters in black with one circling a red circle in the top character and the other a green circle in the bottom character. The bottom right has Haku Maki’s block signature in orange. In pencil from left to right it seems to read “17/50″ as in number 17 out of the 50 of this version created. Next in pencil is says Animal Song. Being the symbol for ox. At the far right is also in pencil “Haku Maki”. The actual print measurements are 17 in by 17 in on thick paper. On the back you can see the shapes and characters pressed through into the paper as well as a small sticker in the right hand corner that says HM6, presumably for Haku Maki. Message for additional information, photos and offers. READ THE CONDITION DESCRIPTION AREA ABOVE for a more thorough writeup. The photos are a very accurate representation of the condition of this print. I know that the condition of this piece is of the utmost importance so in order to keep it safe in transit I put the print between two pieces of thick hard foam board to keep it from bending. Then the whole thing is wrapped in another layer of cardboard to keep the inner most layer even more protected. It’s firm enough that someone would have to try with purpose to actually bend it so that it stays in existing condition. If there is anything else please feel free to contact me. The intricate design and subdued colors of this Japanese style print showcases the artistry and cultural significance of Japan in the mid-20th century. This piece is a timeless and exquisite representation of the region’s heritage and artistic flair. This print was professionally framed in its Vintage Black Bamboo Frame in January 1964 by Hudsons Framing, which provides additional protection to the signed print. The Frame measures 20.25″ x 16.25″. The framer marked and dated the back. Please be sure to view all photos as they are an important part of the item description. As you will see, the print has been protected and is in excellent condition. The glass appears to be archival glass but I have not confirmed that by a professional but it seems to provide some reflective control. If you have an interest in this piece, let’s have a conversation, please message me. I’m happy to answer questions you may have.

Rare Signed & Numbered Woodblock by Inagaki Toshijiro, Path in a Grove 1964

Rare Signed & Numbered Woodblock by Inagaki Toshijiro, Path in a Grove 1964

Rare Signed & Numbered Woodblock by Inagaki Toshijiro, Path in a Grove 1964

Titled “Path in a Grove, ” this monochrome woodcut was posthumously published in 1964 by the esteemed Mikumo Mokuhanga studio and printed by Kurose Isao. It is signed and hand-numbered #162 of 700. Only a handful of woodblock prints were ever designed by Inagaki, who was primarily known as a revolutionary textile designer and kataezome master. His works are held in the permanent collections of major institutions including the Portland Art Museum, where another impression of Path in a Grove is part of the museum’s holdings. This semi-abstract landscape composition depicts a winding path through a densely wooded grove, rendered in stark black against warm ivory washi paper. The stylized trees evoke both traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern design language-an elegant convergence of simplicity and depth. A color version (blue/gold) appears to have been printed later and possibly posthumously; this is the original black & white design. Title: Path in a Grove. Medium: Monochrome woodblock print on paper. Date: 1964 (published posthumously). Edition: Signed and numbered, #162/700. Framed Size: 15.75″ x 19″. Inagaki Toshijiro began as a textile designer and rose to become a nationally recognized artist in Japan. In 1962, he was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property for his mastery of kataezome (stencil dyeing). His work is exhibited in major museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Art Institute of Chicago. He was a professor at Kyoto City University of Arts and a close collaborator of potter and fellow National Treasure Tomimoto Kenkichi. Don’t miss the opportunity to own a rare, museum-catalogued print by a master of 20th-century Japanese art.
