Paper Size: 10 3/8 x 15 3/8. Medium: woodblock print on paper. This print was previously framed. It was taped to a border, and the tape is still on it. Unless you are a professional, removing the tape will likely rip or cause paper loss to the print. The good news is that if this is framed again, the new border will cover up the tape. Three of the last four photos show the print using only one flash from the side, to make any creases and ripples more apparent. This one has a lot of gentle ripples, mainly in the top half of the print. There are a couple of more obvious ones, pointed out in a photo. Tsuchiya Koitsu Japanese woodblock print Sunset at Tomonotsu, Inland Sea. Koitsu Tsuchiya’s prints immortalize Japan’s scenic beauty. Through subtle effects of light and shadow, Koitsu endows his art with an aura of bewitching beauty. Born in 1870 outside of Hamamatsu, he was given the name Koichi. At the age of 15, he moved to Tokyo to study Japanese wood block printing under Matsuzaki, a carver for the ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika. However, he soon left Matsuzaki and became a student Kiyochika himself. For 19 years, Koitsu lived in Kiyochikas home, studying the art of woodblock printing. His first prints (1894-95) were war scenes of the Sino-Japanese war and he later worked as a lithographer. Chance meeting with the publisher Watanabe changed the course of his career. This is a VERY rare woodblock entitled “Sunset at Morigasaki” which was published by Watanabe Shozaburo in 1932. It has the appropriate “B” seal and is a well made impression. Overall size is approx. The image is about 9-3/8″ x 14-1/4″. No tears or creases, but there is an old deep blue staining at the lower right corner as you can see in the photos. Also, this was matted when I found it, and there is an obvious shadowing where the mat was. We are starting at a very low price because of these issues. Don’t let it get away! Very nice c1940 Tsuchiya Koitsu “Sunset at Tomonotsu, Inland Sea” Japanese woodblock print. The print is unframed and in paper mat folder and is tacked in two corners. 15 3/8″ x 10 1/4″ with margins. It is in very good original condition with no tears, no holes, no water staining, no repairs, just a very nice piece ready for framing.
