This is a woodblock print by Kawase Tosui. It is rubbed with a woodblock on a silk book (silk fabric), not on Japanese paper. Although there are only a few types and numbers, such silk-bound woodblock prints exist among Tomoe Sui’s works. Silk-bound books are usually used for hanging scroll works of old Japanese paintings. Date of production = unknown, but it is quite old. The overall size of the print paper is approximately 16 cm (length) x 9.8 cm (width) 6.2 x 3.8. Please refer to the photos. Born as the eldest son of a merchant of threadwork, his uncle was the playwright Kanagaki Roubun. He was a student of Kaburaki Kiyokata and received the name “Tomoe” at that time. He later became acquainted with Shozaburo Watanabe, and also became interested in woodblock prints after seeing “Eight Views of Omi” by Shinsui Ito, a fellow student of Kaburaki Kiyokata. In 1918, he published the Shiobara Trilogy from the Watanabe Print Shop, and thereafter published many landscape prints throughout his life. Title Japanese Landscape Collection II: Amagasaki Big Shot, Kansai. Date: 1940 (Showa 15). Condition: Fine condition with holes. Size 26.5 x 39.5 cm. Lake Kisaki is one of the three lakes of Nishina in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, located on the most downstream river. This is a work by Kawase Tomoe Sui, a leading new print artist. Moon over the Arakawa River” is one of the “Twenty Views of Tokyo in which Tomoe Sui depicted scenes from various parts of Tokyo. It is estimated to have been painted in the Akabane area. The moon, positioned slightly off center, is depicted at the moment it peeks out from between the slowly moving clouds. The reflection of the water is clearly visible, indicating that it was a quiet and peaceful night. This is one of a series of works titled “Nihon Keikan Shu Higashinihon Hen” (Japanese Landscapes of Eastern Japan) produced by Kawase Tomoe Sui in 1933. It depicts Futakojima Island in Matsushima, known as one of the Three Great Views of Japan. The twin islands are placed in the foreground, and the horizon line and heavy clouds hovering above it are depicted in the background, with the shining moon peeking out from between the clouds. The moonlight illuminates the blue, and you can almost feel the coolness and stillness of the air. This is a reprint, but it is in excellent condition and the colors of the print are beautiful, so it is recommended as a gift. Born in Tokyo, Japan.
