He began designing prints of beautiful women using the name Kikumaro. From 1804 changed his name to Tsukimaro. 1820 ceased to design prints, painting instead hanging scrolls of beauties in a style influenced by the Maruyama-Shijo school, which he signed’Kansetsu’. His last dated work is an illustration for a’kyoka’ anthology published in 1836. Full large oban size (15 1/4 X 10 1/2) untrimmed, unframed. This print printed in “aizuri-e”, the colors are great. Antique Japanese Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) Woodblock Print Framed with Glass

This is a woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro. The title given on the back of the frame is “A Summer Evening, ” but you can find this print elsewhere under other titles, including Woman Sitting on Edge of Veranda. The image is of a young woman relaxing on a bench in a blue kimono with delicate flowers, a fan in one hand. To her right are a tobacco pipe and case, and a bowl. Barely seen through the window blind behind her is a bamboo plant. She is sitting with one knee up, with a bare foot. The sandal below her has been discarded next to her other sandaled foot. The print is mounted on a gold foil frame, behind which is silk fabric in pale teal, textured with gray flowers and filligree. A collector has told me this is likely a re-carved version of the original print. This history is hand-written on the back of the painting by my grandmother, Constance’s cousin. The label reads: K.
