Important Japanese complete antique woodblock print map of view of Yokohama, 1861. Hard to find view and map This is one of the earliest maps of Yokohama harbor depicting American, British, Russian and European foreign trade ships, and western merchant visitation buildings of the area known as Gankiro which was restricted and had limited access. The port of Yokohama was surrounded by water to keep foreigners off the Tokaido Road, which was nearby and very dangerous since Samurai often used it to travel to Edo (now the capital of Tokyo). The Shogun also wanted to limit the contact between foreigners and the Japanese people. Beautiful woodblock printed quality, printed on two sheets, immediately frame able. Good displayable condition, original fine condition, just the way we like to find them. Printed on washi (mulberry) paper. Quality: Fine quality for its good age. This woodblock print was printed from washi paper of that day and is in good condition with sharp impressions. Age: It dates, 1861.
