This is a Rare & Vintage 1950 Maeda Masao (1904 – 1974) Japanese Woodblock Print titled, “Fuji from Lake Ashi (Morning View)”. Print appears to be in excellent condition and is framed and protected under glass. The Print has very bright colors and very little to no signs of age. It appears that whoever framed the print partially covered the artist signature at the bottom left corner (third picture). It appears that this woodblock was frame several years ago as the frame appears older with some nicks and dings. The frame is overall solid and in good condition. The Frame measures 15″ tall, by 18″ wide. The visible woodblock print alone measures 8 3/4″ tall by 11 1/2″ wide. The frame weighs 2 LBS 9 OZ. Most of the items I sell are estate finds, and are presented to you in, as is, as found condition. They are described to the best of my knowledge. Some wear is to be expected, unless described as flawless or mint. I cannot know everything about every item I offer, I do inspect each item and list all known flaws or damage. So please take a good look at the photos and ask questions if need be. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”. The seller is “518999″ and is located in this country: US. There are only two other known examples of this image, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Both of those prints have Frank Lloyd Wright provenance. Per the coloration on this example, I think it’s a winter setting. The known provenance on this woodblock is: Davis & Long Company, NYC. Under a different name, Davis & Langdale Company, they’re still in business. For just head and shoulders actor portraits. His work is very, very rare. 12 1/8 x 5 1/2″ sheet size woodblock floated on paperboard in gilded frame measuring overall at 17 1/8 x 10 1/2″, with gallery label verso. Not examined out of frame, which isn’t in perfect shape. The print has discoloration, etc. But this is from the 1790′s and we’re lucky it even still exists. Katsukawa Shun’ei Japanese:?? 1762 – 13 December 1819 was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist. Shun’ei’s real surname was Isoda?? , and his father was a landlord named Isoda Jirobei?? Shun’ei belonged to the Katsukawa school of artists; his earliest work dates to 1778. He designed mainly yakusha-e portraits of kabuki actors, and began producing okubi-e bust portraits as early as 1791. He illustrated a seven-volume kabuki guide called Shibai kinmo zue (“Illustrated Guide to the Theatre”). He also made musha-e warrior prints and prints of sumo wrestlers. 1800 he took over as head from his teacher, Shunsho. His most prominent students were Katsukawa Shuntei [ja] and Katsukawa Shunsen. Shun’ei and several other artists, including Utamaro and Toyokuni, were jailed and manacled for 50 days in 1804 for producing prints depicting Toyotomi Hideyoshi based on the Ehon taikoki (“Illustrated Chronicles of the Regent”). Up for sale is this beautiful woodblock print, “Katsura-rikyu” depicting the Katsura Imperial Villa, an imperial residence located in the suburbs of Kyoto. The print was created by Clifton Karhu, perhaps the most-acclaimed non-Japanese woodblock print artists of all time (with the exception of Charles Bartlett). Katsura grew up in Minnesota, but moved to Japan after joining the military and being stationed there. Karhu’s style is pretty unique, usually employing bold colors overlaid with a traditional Japanese sensibility. This piece is quite typical of his work, and shows a beautiful vibrancy. Print is matted and framed under glass in a tasteful bamboo wood frame. The piece is in excellent condition. Frame is in very good condition, showing a few nicks. I have not examined the print outside the frame. Please see the photos. Due to the glass, there is a little bit of glare on the photos, but the print looks exquisite. I’m happy to answer any particular questions about condition or provide additional photos. Visible area of the print measures approximately 14 inches wide by 10.75 inches high. Frame measures approximately 17.125 inches wide by 13 inches wide. If the item is not paid for within this time frame, an unpaid item case will be opened. More pictures available on request. Please note that this item is not accompanied by a certificate of authenticity or any other source verifying its authenticity. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”. Rare 19th Cent Woodblock Print The Ghost of Yaehatah by Yoshitoshi Tsukioka

Rare 19th Cent Woodblock Print The Ghost of Yaehatah by Yoshitoshi Tsukioka

Rare 19th Cent Woodblock Print The Ghost of Yaehatah by Yoshitoshi Tsukioka

Rare Antique 19th Century Japanese wood block print titled The Ghost of Yaehatahime (Yaehatahime no bôrei) and Akamatsu Jûtamaru Takanori, from the series Sagas of Beauty and Bravery (Biyû Suikoden) by Yoshitoshi Tsukioka. Sagas of Beauty and Bravery. Yoshitoshi explored and reinterpreted themes of the supernatural in the context of the tales of the Suikoden. While the images can be bloody and full of gore, they retain a charm often missing in his later works. This unusual series, stems from early in Yoshitoshi’s career. In style as well as subject matter the series owes a huge debt to his teacher Kuniyoshi. Yoshitoshi, eccentrically though, chooses to use Kuniyoshi’s precedent, (Kuniyoshi did not complete the series) but then adds a variety of extra characters from legend, stories and folk tales as well as some popular kabuki roles. The series becomes a virtual compendium of imagery and narrative from woodblock art and popular fiction, some of which – confusingly for the viewer – makes little sense at times. Nevertheless, it is a fine series and well regarded, the prints are crisp and tight and well produced and the depictions clearly show the inventiveness that was to follow, later in Yoshitoshi’s career. The piece is mounted and glazed within an ebonised frame. It is in a very good condition with no visible damage or visible foxing. The son of a Tokyo physician, Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (ne´ Kinzaburo Yoshioka) is considered one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e art. As a young boy he showed remarkable talent and began to study under the renowned Kuniyoshi at the age of 12. Yoshitoshi also studied under Yosai and was adopted by the Tsukioka family. As modernization pushed ahead, Yoshitoshi suffered a nervous breakdown in 1872, living in poverty and ceasing all artistic production. A year later, he resumed working; adopting the artist name Taiso and fulfilling his creative potential. In 1885, he began one of his most acclaimed series. 100 Views of the Moon. In the spring of 1892, he suffered his final mental breakdown and was committed to the Sugamo Asylum. On the 9th of June 1892, he died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 53. Yoshitoshi’s prints are known for their eerie and imaginative component. He worked in a Japan undergoing rapid change, straddling the domains of the old, feudal systems and the new, modern world. His considerable imagination and originality imbued his prints with a sensitivity and honesty rarely seen in ukiyo-e of this time period. From ghost stories to folktales, graphic violence to the gentle glow of the moon, Yoshitoshi not only offers compositional and technical brilliance, but also unfettered passion.
