Antique Japanese Woodblock Print – Katsukawa Shunko – Edo Period (Late 18th Century). Pupil of Katsukawa Shunsho. Two Women Beneath Blossoming Branches with Umbrella. Original Japanese woodblock print on handmade washi paper. 14.5″ x 10″ (sheet size, visible image slightly smaller). Signed “Shunko ga” with two seals in the lower left corner. Unknown (seal is unknown in modern databases). Two elegant women (bijin) under hanging blossoms, holding an umbrella – a refined Edo-period bijinga composition typical of the Katsukawa school. Light overall toning and visible foxing throughout (especially margins). Some paper thinning and wear near edges, consistent with age. Print was folded into 6′ths so even though it lays flat, there is visible creasing. Two small holes noted in closeup pictures. Colors remain soft but present; registration appears well-aligned. Mounted to backing paper, likely by an early collector. Collector’s label on reverse identifying artist as Shunko. This woodblock print is an authentic example of Katsukawa Shunko’s graceful bijin-ga style, reflecting the transition from the bold, actor-focused prints of Katsukawa Shunsho to more refined portrayals of fashionable women. Shunko was among the first artists to produce large-format (oban) prints using full-color techniques before the rise of Utamaro. The soft coloration and delicate linework in this print are characteristic of late 18th-century impressions. Early Katsukawa school prints by Shunko and Shunsho typically range from. Depending on condition and subject. Prints with similar age and foxing, mounted or toned, generally trade near the. This print remains in good, well-preserved condition for its age, showing moderate, even toning and light scattered foxing consistent with late 18th century handmade washi. The color palette retains balanced pigment definition. Paper edges and there are no tears or repairs, but does have 2 small holes. Overall, an attractive and authentic Edo-period impression that displays beautifully. The backing boards will be covered in a moisture wrap for further protection against liquid and will then be wrapped in bubble wrap for shock absorption. There are only two other known examples of this image, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Both of those prints have Frank Lloyd Wright provenance. Per the coloration on this example, I think it’s a winter setting. The known provenance on this woodblock is: Davis & Long Company, NYC. Under a different name, Davis & Langdale Company, they’re still in business. For just head and shoulders actor portraits. His work is very, very rare. 12 1/8 x 5 1/2″ sheet size woodblock floated on paperboard in gilded frame measuring overall at 17 1/8 x 10 1/2″, with gallery label verso. Not examined out of frame, which isn’t in perfect shape. The print has discoloration, etc. But this is from the 1790′s and we’re lucky it even still exists. Katsukawa Shun’ei Japanese:?? 1762 – 13 December 1819 was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist. Shun’ei’s real surname was Isoda?? , and his father was a landlord named Isoda Jirobei?? Shun’ei belonged to the Katsukawa school of artists; his earliest work dates to 1778. He designed mainly yakusha-e portraits of kabuki actors, and began producing okubi-e bust portraits as early as 1791. He illustrated a seven-volume kabuki guide called Shibai kinmo zue (“Illustrated Guide to the Theatre”). He also made musha-e warrior prints and prints of sumo wrestlers. 1800 he took over as head from his teacher, Shunsho. His most prominent students were Katsukawa Shuntei [ja] and Katsukawa Shunsen. Shun’ei and several other artists, including Utamaro and Toyokuni, were jailed and manacled for 50 days in 1804 for producing prints depicting Toyotomi Hideyoshi based on the Ehon taikoki (“Illustrated Chronicles of the Regent”).
