Formal Name: Rakuzan kacho-gafu. Pussy willow and plover. Contents: First edition made by Rakuzan. Year of publication: 1929. 46×60cm(18×23.6 inch). There are light stains. Rakuzan was born in Kyoto. When he was young, he studied under Takeuchi Seiho, a pioneer of modern Japanese painting and a representative painter of Kyoto painting. The woodblock prints of Rakuzan have been reprinted using the same woodblock prints in recent years, but this print is a valuable first edition. This item is not new. Framed small size Toyokuni III (Kunisada) Japanese Woodblock print from 1848, from story by Mantei Oga. Likely original from 1848, given quality of silk matting, and gold edge as part of framing. Note that Toyokuni III (Kunisada) changed his signature in 1844, which aligns with signature in the print. Oga’s unconventional natures comes out clearly in this interesting illustration of mother and child. Of print only visible in frame: 17 mm x 11.4 mm; 6-3/4 in x 4.5 in possibly. Yotsugiri in size. With frame: 36.8 mm x 24 mm; 14-7/16 in x 9.5 in. Printer’s seal in lower left? Note some water damage at bottom of matte, other signs of age as would be expected for a 150+ year old print.

The artist’s has signed in the print to the left-hand edge. Well-presented in a simple black frame with a crisp white mount. Several faint marks visible on the black frame and white mount. Size: 23 x 17cm (9.1″ x 6.7″). Framed Size: 33 x 26cm (13″ x 10.2″). Includes a Certificate of Authenticity. Formal Name:Shin-bijutsukai Combined vol. Author: Furuya korin(Supervision: Kamisaka sekka). Year of publication: 1980? The first edition was published in the 1910s. This edition was printed in 1980 using the same woodblocks as the first edition. Contents: 100 pages of woodcut color illustrations. Size: 24.1×16.4cm(9.5×6.5inch). Year of publication: 1980. Condition: Overall clean condition. Shin-bijutsukai is a collection of beautifully colored designs that fuses traditional Japanese designs with modern Western designs. It features a dynamic and innovative design with motifs of animals, plants and natural sculptures. Born in Kaizu, Shiga Prefecture in 1875, Korin studied with Suzuki Mannen, Kamisaka Sekka and Asai Chu. He won the painting category of the Shinko Bijutsu Tenrankai (Exhibition of New and Old Art) in 1897. He taught at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts from 1905, being appointed an assistant professor before his death in 1910. Among his works are popular illustrated books in the Rinpa tradition. Korin Patterns (Korin moyo) (1907), a two-volume, ink-on-paper work originally conceived as a sample book for the kimono industry, became popular with people interested in fashion. Carpenter of the Metropolitan Museum of Art describes the book as “impressive”. It contains images based on wave patterns as well as the traditional boatman in a skiff. Other works published by Yamada Unsodo include several orihon (concertina-type binding) books with patterns based on flowers and plants (1905), pine trees (1905) and bamboo (1907). His works are held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. (These are from wikipedia). This item is not new.
