Japanese woodblock print by. This design was originally published in 1984 by the Yoshida Hanga Studio. We are offering a posthumously printed image, made from the original blocks, and acquired directly from the Yoshida family. While it is signed in the block, it still looks like it is pencil signed to an untrained eye. To avoid any misunderstanding, the Yoshida Hanga Studio also included the seal of the printer on the reverse. The image measures 6 7/8 x 4 3/4 inches, plus full margins. The condition is excellent. Up until his father passed away in 1950, Toshi Yoshida primarily produced works that were reminiscent of his father’s landscape prints. His later works include a wide assortment of subjects, styles and techniques. Don’t settle for a giclee or other mechanical reproduction. These woodblock prints are made using the same printing process as the original pencil signed run, under the supervision of the artist’s family and meeting their exacting standards. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”. The seller is “floatingworldgallery” and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped to United States.

There are only two other known examples of this image, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Both of those prints have Frank Lloyd Wright provenance. Per the coloration on this example, I think it’s a winter setting. The known provenance on this woodblock is: Davis & Long Company, NYC. Under a different name, Davis & Langdale Company, they’re still in business. For just head and shoulders actor portraits. His work is very, very rare. 12 1/8 x 5 1/2″ sheet size woodblock floated on paperboard in gilded frame measuring overall at 17 1/8 x 10 1/2″, with gallery label verso. Not examined out of frame, which isn’t in perfect shape. The print has discoloration, etc. But this is from the 1790′s and we’re lucky it even still exists. Katsukawa Shun’ei Japanese:?? 1762 – 13 December 1819 was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist. Shun’ei’s real surname was Isoda?? , and his father was a landlord named Isoda Jirobei?? Shun’ei belonged to the Katsukawa school of artists; his earliest work dates to 1778. He designed mainly yakusha-e portraits of kabuki actors, and began producing okubi-e bust portraits as early as 1791. He illustrated a seven-volume kabuki guide called Shibai kinmo zue (“Illustrated Guide to the Theatre”). He also made musha-e warrior prints and prints of sumo wrestlers. 1800 he took over as head from his teacher, Shunsho. His most prominent students were Katsukawa Shuntei [ja] and Katsukawa Shunsen. Shun’ei and several other artists, including Utamaro and Toyokuni, were jailed and manacled for 50 days in 1804 for producing prints depicting Toyotomi Hideyoshi based on the Ehon taikoki (“Illustrated Chronicles of the Regent”). Original Tomioka Eisen Japanese Woodblock Shunga Print C

Original Tomioka Eisen (1864 – 1904) Japanese Woodblock Print – C “Comparison Of Faces” Shunga, ca. This beautiful print is from a rare and unusual “Comparison Of Faces” series. Rather than capturing the entire scene of romance, only the woman’s face and her vag are shown. To do this, the subject is split into two sides. One side features the woman’s face and the other side features a “close-up” of her vag. In the cultural context of shunga, the woman’s vag functions as another face – the face of her passion and desire that she is obligated to hide. It is a familiar trope in shunga for part eroticism to arise from the exposure of the hidden, but this series is a rare example of this effect being carried out so explicitly. In these prints, the public faces of the women are shown to no longer be able to effectively conceal their passion in the heat of the romance. Nice “bokashi” shading; light “gauffrage” (embossing) to kimono and sexual organs; very highly detailed carving of hair-lines; crisp line work. Image size – 8″ x 5 1/8″.
