Torii Kiyonaga Woodblock Print Women Buying Potted Plants from Street Vendor

From an estate sale with many fine Asian antiques in Los Angeles. Two women, one with a little boy on her back, examine the potted plants a street vendor has for sale. On offer are a potted plum bonsai and adonis flowers (fukujuso) in variously shaped pots, so we know the setting is the New Year. The lantern mount behind the vendor, decorated with paper and plant streamers, also signals the beginning of spring. This print belongs to a series of twenty designs depicting groups of people from various classes wearing elegant street clothes. Measures approximately 10″ x 15.75″. I removed it from its frame to get a closer look. The frame has been discarded. Contact me with any questions.

Who is also known as Shunko II, was a designer of books and ukiyo-e style Japanese woodblock prints. He was born in 1762 and designed prints from about 1805 to about 1821. He initially studied with the Rimpa school artist Tsutsumi Torin III. In 1806 or 1807, Shunsen became a student of Katsukawa Shun’ei, and changed his name from “Kojimachi Shunsen” to “Katsukawa Shunsen”. In 1820 he succeeded Katsukawa Shunko I, becoming Katsukawa Shunko II. In the late 1820s, he ceased producing woodblock prints and devoted himself to painting ceramics. He died about 1830.

ORIGINAL JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT TWO WOMEN BY KITAGAWA UTAMARO, ca. This is an antique original (not a later print nor reproduction) print of two women, a Courtesan smoking a pipe seated on a bench on a summer night with her breasts exposed as her attendant cools her with a fan. The print is by Kitagawa Utamaro. Medium: color woodblock print (oban). Kitagawa Utamaro (1753 – 31 October 1806) was a Japanese artist and one of the most highly regarded designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings, and is best known for his bijin okubi-e “large-headed pictures of beautiful women” of the 1790s. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects. Measurements: (framed) 22 x 17 x 1 inch.
