An original Japanese woodblock print from 1948(Showa 23) by Kawase Hasui. This print is in excellent condition. Displayed under uv protected glass the color is amazing with an incredible deep blue. Very little staining on back and only 3 or 4 faint browning spots on the front margins. There are also two minor pinholes in the margins as usual. The edges are crisp. Very little waviness at the top and the bottom of the print. Please refer to the pictures. This is an extraordinary copy for a lifetime edition of this Hasui print. This woodblock print was first published in 1940, Koitsu Catalog Raisonné Number: TK-DH-62. Is signed on the block and has no additional carver or printer seals, indicating that it is a later 1960s edition by Doi Publishing House. Vertical Oban with Image Size: 14.5″ x 9.5″. This print has full margins with sharp registry and s trong bleed through to verso. There are no tears or repairs. There is mild ex mat toning to borders on the lower right and a. Esidue remains on the back from original mounting. Please review the pictures. Pictures taken in natural light indoors to show actual colors. Koitsu lived with Kiyochika for 19 years and was considered a member of Kiyochika’s family. In 1932, he started to produce landscape prints in the Shin Hanga style for Watanabe. He later designed prints for various publishers including Doi, Kawaguchi, Baba Nobuhiko, and Takemura. The Shin Hanga woodblock prints of Tsuchiya Koitsu are notable for their dramatic use of light and shadow. Print is titled “Evening Glow in Spring, Toshogu Shrine, Ueno”. In good vintage condition, there is a small hole in the upper left margin, and some paper residue on the reverse side, from where glue was applied to hold the print to a backing. Artist block signed with his personal seal in red at bottom right corner, publishers seal in black located at. Left corner, partially obscured. There may be minor fading to the print due to its age, but the colors are still vibrant and strong, with a good bleed through to the reverse side. I’ve included photos taken both outside in the shade and sun, as well as some inside photos to try and give the most accurate representation or the colors.
