This woodblock print depcts the. Sengakuji temple at night. And was first published in 1933 by Doi publishing house. Takanawa Sengakuji is a small temple near Shinagawa Station in Tokyo. The temple is famous for its graveyard where the “47 Ronin” (also known as Akoroshi, the “masterless samurai from Ako”) are buried. The story of the 47 loyal ronin remains one of the most popular historical stories in Japan, and many people visit the temple in order to pay respect to the Akoroshi by burning incense sticks (senko) in the graveyard. A small museum commemorating the 47 ronin can also be found at Sengakuji. On washi paper is signed with the Koitsu seal on the block and has no additional seals, indicating that it is likely a later 1950s edition by Doi Publishing. There is a price seal from 1950s on the back of the envelope. The print is in Horizontal Oban format with Image Size: 14.5″ x 10″. The print is attached to its original folder. Both paper and folder are old but appear in excellent condition. The print has full margins with sharp registry. There are no tears or repairs. Please review the pictures. Koitsu lived with Kiyochika for 19 years and was considered a member of Kiyochika’s family. He only became an internationally-known artist after his meeting with Watanabe Shozaburo, the founder of the Shin Hanga print movement, at an exhibition of Kiyochika’s works in 1931. In 1932, he started to produce landscape prints in the Shin Hanga style for Watanabe. Koitsu Tsuchiya became a leading Shin Hanga artist along with Kawase Hasui, Hiroshi Yoshida, and Shiro Kasamatsu. The Shin Hanga woodblock prints of Tsuchiya Koitsu are notable for their dramatic use of light and shadow. He later designed prints for various publishers including Doi, Kawaguchi, Baba Nobuhiko, and Takemura. Toshi learned much of his technique from his father and at 19 went on a sketching trip to India and Southeast Asia with him. In 1950, after the death his father, Toshi distinguished himself by creating abstract works for the first time. It was an easyI suppose inevitablestep to abstraction, but it was a step my father could never approve, he said of his work. Still I could not ignore the movement of the times and I began to break away from my former realistic approach. He went on to make over 300 of these non-objective woodblock prints. The artist died at 93 years old on July 1, 1995 in Tokyo, Japan. His works are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
