A Rare Japanese Woodblock Egoyomi Calendar Print Ca. 7 3/8 x 4 ins. (18.8 x 10.2 cms) Up until 1873 when the Western calendar was adopted the Japanese calendar was based on the Lunar system in which every year the order of long and short months was determined by the Government. Consequently, as the order of long and short varied from year to year, an annual calendar was needed. The publishers of these calendars had to be licensed by the government. Whereas many was straight forward lists it became the fashion to hide the list of months in the design, sometimes in an obvious way but often in a cunning and well hidden manner. These prints are known as egoyomi and as they were out of date after 12 months they were regarded as disposable and most no longer survive. In the present example the numerals are on the hilts and tsuba of the daisho pair of swords which are displayed in their corded silk wrappings alongside a black lacquer storage box. The print is rather worn and surface soiled. It has a light backing with the remains of mounting tape. There is an illegible signature at the right hand corner. It is quite possible that the print is the sole survivor of this design but impossible to prove. PLEASE INSPECT PHOTOS CAREFULLY. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS AN ORIGINAL PRINTING NOT A FACSIMILE OR REPRINT. Japanese Woodblock Surimono Print by Gototei Kunisada. Class A. 1890s

A Fine Japanese Woodblock Surimono Print by Gototei Kunisada. 7 1/8 x 8 5/8 ins. (18.3 x 21 cms) As surimono were produced in small editions for specific purposes e. New Year cards, poetry club circulars etc. The originals are very rare and very expensive. In the Meiji era ca. 1890 many were reprinted, usually known as Akashi reprints, after the town at which they were produced. Recent research into these reprints has divided them into A, B, C & D categories in descending order of quality, A being the finest and comparable in quality to the originals. The present example is an A class print. Many of the less fine categories have been simplified for reasons of economy, e. Often the poem in the top section is omitted and the range of colours and metallic pigments is reduced. This fine design by Kunisada was originally published ca. It is a portrait of Yang Guifei, a favourite but corrupt concubine of an 8th. Century Tang Dynasty Chinese Emperor. Eventually she caused a rebellion and was hung from a pear tree. The original printing is illustrated in colour and fully described with translations of the poems in Sebastian Izzard’s seminal work Kunisada’s World (1993). The print is in excellent condition with no damage and no repairs. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO SEE ALL PHOTOGRAPHS.
