Gototei Kunisada (UTAGAWA KUNISADA). Ukiyoe Japanese woodblock print “Bizinga”. Gotptei Kunisada (UTAGAWA KUNISADA). Name of work:”Bizinga” Painting of beautiful women. Type : Ukiyoe, Woodblock print, Japanese. Size: 38cm × 24cm – Ukiyo-e. 46cm × 30cm – Mounting paper. Date of death: 1.12.15 Genji(1865.1.12). Date of birth: 1786. Ukiyoe artist of the late Edo period. His family name was Kakuta and his first name was Shozo, later changed to Kyozo. His painting aliases include Gototei, Kachorou, and after Toyokuni assumed his name, Ichiyo-sai. His father, Shobei, ran a ferry in Gotsume, Honjo, Edo. He was apprenticed to Utagawa Toyokuni I, and his first brush stroke was in 1808 in the joint volume “Kagamiyama Honor Avenge”, and his first nishiki-e work is said to have been made in March Bunka 6. He showed his precocious talent in the illustrations of his works and in his nishikie (nishikie) paintings of actors and beauties. From the end of Bunka period (1804-18) to the Bunsei period (1818-30), his works such as “Ototo Kyogen no uchi” (Kyogen no uchi) for yakusha-e (actor pictures) and “Hoshinomorojyofuzoku” and “Imafu Kesho Kagami” (Make-up Mirror) for bijinga (portraits of beautiful women) are excellent series full of talent and enthusiasm. The first volume of “Shohonsei” by Tanehiko Yanagitei, published at the beginning of Bunka 12, was well received for its illustrations, and “Ikumurashi-naka Genji” by Tanehiko, published at the beginning of Bunsei 12, was a big hit. In 1844, he was named Toyokuni II due to his great popularity, but since Toyoshige had already assumed the name Toyokuni II, he is counted as the third generation of the family today. From this time onward, his painting style became more elegant and exquisite in combination with the advancement of printmaking techniques, such as “TARAEORI TOSEJIMA, ” but there is no denying that the overall quality of his work declined toward the end of his life due to overuse of his artwork. However, the series of yakusha (actor) head paintings published by Kinshodo in his last years are full of spirit and represent the culmination of his painting career. Kunisada took advantage of the popularization of Ukiyo-e to produce an enormous volume of paintings, and together with Hiroshige, Kuniyoshi, and other artists of the Utagawa school, he led the Ukiyo-e world at the end of the Edo period. Shigezo Suzuki, “Kunisada, Kuniyoshi, Eisen” Ukiyoe Compendium, vol. It is partially pasted on the base paper. There are dullness and tears on the mount. About Importer’s Obligation. New Year cards, poetry club circulars etc. The originals are very rare and very expensive. In the Meiji era ca. 1890 many were reprinted, usually known as Akashi reprints, after the town at which they were produced. Recent research into these reprints has divided them into A, B, C & D categories in descending order of quality, A being the finest and comparable in quality to the originals. The present example is an A class print. Many of the less fine categories have been simplified for reasons of economy, e. Often the poem in the top section is omitted and the range of colours and metallic pigments is reduced. This fine design by Kunisada was originally published ca. It is a portrait of Yang Guifei, a favourite but corrupt concubine of an 8th. Century Tang Dynasty Chinese Emperor. Eventually she caused a rebellion and was hung from a pear tree. The original printing is illustrated in colour and fully described with translations of the poems in Sebastian Izzard’s seminal work Kunisada’s World (1993).
