Nakamura Fukusuke I as Fuwa Banzaemon, Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Shinzo Hanatachibana, and Bando Takesaburo I as Nagoya Sanza. 30 June 1835 1 July 1900 was a Japanese woodblock print artist. Talented as a child, at about thirteen he became a student of Tokyo’s then-leading print maker, Utagawa Kunisada. His deep appreciation and knowledge of kabuki. Drama led to his production primarily of ukiyo-e. Actor-prints, which are woodblock prints of kabuki actors and scenes from popular plays of the time. An alcoholic and womanizer, Kunichika also portrayed women deemed beautiful bijinga. , contemporary social life, and a few landscapes and historical scenes. He worked successfully in the Edo period. And carried those traditions into the Meiji period. To his contemporaries and now to some modern art historians, this has been seen as a significant achievement during a transitional period of great social and political change in Japan’s history. The kabuki actors (right sheet) Nakamura Fukusuke I as Fuwa Banzaemon; (centre sheet) Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Shinzo Hanatachibana; and (left sheet) Bando Takesaburo I as Nagoya Sanza; in the dance section Kankatsu Sayaate of the hengemono dance Sanpukutsui kabuki no irodori (also read Sanbukutsui kabuki no irodori,), with lyrics by Segawa Joko III and music by Kineya Katsusaburo II; performed at the Ichimura-za from the 4th of the 5th month of 1855 (Ansei 2). His Kabuki woodblocks are more rare than his more numerous female featured prints. This piece is entitled Kagamijishi (Lion Dance). Print measurments are 10 1/2 inches by 16 1/2 inches, comes with original paper mat. Please see the other woodblock prints by Hasegawa that I have listed they would make a wonderful set. The original description paper that comes with the prints reads as follows (there is also a photo of the description). One of the Shin-Kabuki’s repertorie comprising 18 classical pieces. It is Kabuki Dance by Nagauta music which is arranged a gallantry of Lion. The actor patterns upon Noh-play the first half this dance and the last half, plays a madness of Lion. The excellent contrast between such as elegance and gallantry is the leading attraction in this dance.
