Original Woodblock Print: Helen Hyde: “A Monarch of Japan” 1901Signed by the Artist. This charming woodblock print is by Helen Hyde, an American artist whose rendering of children and mothers and children were extremely popular in her lifetime. She studied internationally to perfect her craft and was skilled and respected enough to. Win 1st prize for a scroll on which this print is based in an exhibition in Japan that featured Japanese artists. This is one of her most iconic images. This print measures 17 3/4 x 6 inches (sight) with a 22 3/4 x 14 3/4 vintage wooden frame (probably mahogany or walnut). It is archivally matted. Helen Hyde was an etcher, illustrator and painter born in Lima, New York, April 6, 1868. She studied in Paris, Berlin and Japan. Felix Regamey, director of the Musee Guimet in Paris, first inspired her interest in Japanese art. She moved to San Francisco upon her return to America, where she found that the Chinese characteristics of that city interested her, and her. Later, she moved to Japan, where she lived for 15 years. In Japan, she studied with the last of the famous school of the Kano artists, and acquired the Japanese method of wielding the brush, in which she became proficient enough to be awarded first prizein competition with Japanese artists for her painting of a kakemono (hanging scroll) depicting A Monarch of Japan (which this woodblock in based on). Later Miss Hyde took up wood engraving and printing, and her color prints in the world of art became famous. Her charming woodblock renderings of Japanese children are among her most notable and popular works. Like the classic shin hanga masters of the day, Tokuriki designed many woodcuts of landscapes and city views in the traditional manner. Yet he actively promoted sosaku-hanga (creative prints) in Kyoto, which emphasized the artists participation in the entire process of printmaking and the exploration of more modern styles and trends. After WWII Tokuriki set up his own publishing company called Matsukyu and began to teach block-carving to artisans and artists, many of them foreigners. He also wrote extensively on the technique of woodblock carving and printing.
