Detail : a few stains. From a series of paintings of Kabuki dressing rooms. The props depicted with the actors changing costumes and putting on makeup are also interesting. It depicts the hectic yet lively backstage of Kabuki. Toyokuni III was a student of Toyokuni, who called himself Kunisada, but took the name Toyokuni II in Tempo 15. In reality, he was Toyokuni III. Toyokuni III was a pupil of Toyokuni and was named Kunisada, but in 1882 he assumed the name Toyokuni II. He had a reputation for his portrayal of people, especially actors and beauties, and was so powerful and influential that he dominated the Ukiyo-e world at the time. Ichikawa Danjuro as BearerOriginal Antique Japanese Woodblock Print Toyokuni I
Author: adminMar 6
Ichikawa Danjuro VII as a Bearer Tough Guy. Colorful and fun print of the great Ichikawa Danjuro in the role of a cantankerous palanquin bearer. Despite his low class, his robes are fabulous, with red cap, swelling black outer kimono with giant character embroidered on it, and red and green robes underneath, the green with the “mimasu” (triple cup) pattern that was Danjuro’s. Look at the scowl on the actor’s face, the way his hands tense on the boards he carries, and the solid grip of his feet on the ground. This is the manner by which Toyokuni I brought emotion and intensity into his woodblock print designs, without relying on extraneous supports. HASUI Japanese Woodblock Print LATE AUTUMN IN ICHIKAWA 1930 Second Edition
Author: adminFeb 13
Up for your consideration is a rare Japanese Wood Block Print, ” Late Autumn at Ichikawa”, by Kawase Hasui. I inherited an Antique Store a number of years ago and this piece along with several other very nice Wood Block Originals were in the back of the store. I did a lot of research and found that this was made in the 1930′s. Kawase Hasui was a master at wood blocks. I could not find this particular Wood Block for sale on any site. It was in museums and personal collections. This Print is an original it bears all the correct signatures and seals. It measures 15 1/4″ in length and is 10 1/2″ wide. It is in good condition with no rips or tears. But I believe it is faded. I have taken time to do good pictures, please take time to look at them for any unlisted damage. They are part of the description. This is a wonderful Wood Block by a Master Artist. It would be great in any collection.
