It depicts the hectic yet lively backstage of Kabuki. Toyokuni III was a student of Toyokuni, who called himself Kunisada, but took the name Toyokuni II in Tempo 15. In reality, he was Toyokuni III. Toyokuni III was a pupil of Toyokuni and was named Kunisada, but in 1882 he assumed the name Toyokuni II. He had a reputation for his portrayal of people, especially actors and beauties, and was so powerful and influential that he dominated the Ukiyo-e world at the time.
