WB Toyokuni? Japanese Woodblock Prints Kabuki Samurai Poem 1847-52s

Date : Koka 4 – Kaei 5. Detail: some stains / repair a small insect hole / ink writing (actor’s name). This series combines popular actors of the time with haiku, but since actor pictures were forbidden at the time on the grounds that they were disruptive to public morals, they were ostensibly not considered actors. The names of the actors were written on this work by a past owner. It is an even more interesting piece when one looks at the circumstances of the time. Toyokuni III was a student of Toyokuni and called himself Kunisada. He was named Toyokuni 2nd in Tempo 15. In reality, Toyokuni III was Toyokuni III. He had a long period of painting, and the quantity of his works is enormous. He was especially well known for his depictions of people, such as actors and beauties, and had the vigor and power to take the Ukiyo-e world by storm at the time.
