Lovely Hashiguchi GOYO Japanese commemorative woodblock BEAUTY AFTER HER BATH

Lovely Hashiguchi GOYO Japanese commemorative woodblock BEAUTY AFTER HER BATH

Very elegant and lovely print from rare commemorative limited edition. Unfortunately, he died very young, at only 41 years old. First edition prints of Goyo’s works are very expensive. The original blocks for his works were destroyed in the great earthquake of 1923. Fortunately, in the mid 20th century his heirs gave two of Japan’s finest woodblock printers, Tanseisha and Yuyudo, permission to publish very small limited commemorative editions of his masterworks. The prints from these editions were skillfully printed from meticulously recarved blocks and are of the highest quality. This beautiful print is from the Tanseisha C ommemorative Limited Edition. Instead of following in the footsteps of the earlier ukiyo-e artists who most often chose their models from the famous courtesans of their time, Goyo preferred of paint the geishas, waitress and maids of his era. Stunning portrait of a nude after her bath. Her delicate skin is beautifully framed by a shimmering silver mica background. This lovely print would be a wonderful choice for the collector and the interior decorator. It would be striking displayed on your home or office wall. Goyo’s masterworks are in the collections of many of the world’s great museums. Among them are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago. TITLE: Beauty after her Bath. MEDIUM: Authentic polychrome woodblock print. Ink and color on handmade paper. 17 7/8″ x 11 7/8″; (45.4 cm x 30,2 cm). 19″ x 13 ¼”; (48,3 cm x 33,7 cm). CONDITION: Rare limited edition commemorative print. Emulates Goyo’s original masterpiece. Marvelous color and beautiful detail. Shimmering silver mica background. Nice baren rubbings on verso. Frame is black painted wood in very good condition – very slight paint wear from age but not noticeable unless you are up close and know they exist – very tight corners – great condition of back paper covering and hanging wire – no water damage or staining or discoloration. There is artist and subject information attached to the backs of both prints – one print is by Hokuba Teisai as noted in the script on reverse of framed print and the other I believe is “attributed” to Koryusai Isoda from how the information seems to read. Shiro Kasamatsu signed woodblock print cherry blossom numbered #27. His signature in Japanese along left margin and in English lower right in pencil. Back is numbered in pencil; #27. Beautiful print cherry blossom tree along water with the lights of building/home shining though the night. This is an original on a delicate paper. Stamped on lower left. Difficult to tell if English signature was done by Shiro, and was self published, or may have been done by Watanabe(a publisher) after the Great Pacific War. Check catalog of Andreas Grund for more detailed information…. I have not been able to get my hands on it yet, and anyone who has I’d be interested to find out more! He did create 119 self published prints that are limited editions, and because this one is numbered on the back it leads me to believe it may be part of his self published collection. Those prints were made from 50-300 per collection. These were done in the sosaku hanga style, and also done at the end of his career. This specific print is not easy to find, so is a rare beauty!!!! I hope you will enjoy this serene woodblock print done from Tokyo!!!! Print was previously owned and is in excellent condition. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”.
