Moon of the Enemy’s Lair – Yamato-Take no Mikoto, was the third son of emperor Keiko, who reigned from 71-130 AD. The many exploits attributed to him are described in the Kojiki and Nihonji, major histories compiled in the 8th century. We see him here dressed as a woman and concealing his sword. The Emperor sent him to deal with a rebellion, which he does by infiltrating the rebels’ camp in disguise and killing the two brothers who led the rebellion. SIZE: 9.5 ins by 14 ins (25 cm by 35 cm). Joshua Rome 1953-present – American artist Joshua Rome studied and worked in Japan for more than 30 years. His woodblock prints are notable for their warm tones and bright flashes of color, mixing Western design with a Japanese understanding of space. Rome carves his own blocks and self-prints his designs. This stunning bijin-ga, or beauty print is, of course, a Kitagawa Utamaro masterwork. Without a doubt, Utamaro Japanese, c. His classic head and shoulders portraits of courtesans, geishas and teahouse waitresses are among the most sought after of all prints. In fact, many serious collectors consider Utamaro’s beauties to be the very soul of Ukiyo, the Art of the Floating World. Originally painted in c. 1753, this work is a portrait of the renowned courtesan Tomimoto Toyohina. There is beautiful embossed detail on the white kimono collar. An excellent example of Utamaro’s “large head” masterworks. A beautiful print for your home or office wall. Utamaro’s masterworks are in the collections of many of the world’s great museums.
