Tomikichiro Tokuriki Midcentury Japanese Woodblock Print Soba Vendor

Up for sale is this very neat Japanese woodblock print by the prolific Japanese printmaker, Tomikichiro Tokuriki. The print is titled, Soba Vendor. ” Unlike most Japanese woodblock prints which depict nature or a famous landmark, this is a contemporary midcentury “slice-of-life piece showing a noodle cart under the night sky. There is a figure who appears to be playing a wind instrument next to the stand. The light of the stand and the paper lantern affixed to the cart offset the deep purple of the night and the shadows of the figure and tree nicely. In my opinion, it’s one of Tokuriki’s best pieces. A very beautiful print. From my research, this print dates to around 1950. The print is framed under glass in a period frame. It appears to have been framed in the early 1950′s as the framer’s label on the back doesn’t include an area code. The print is in excellent condition. I have not examined it out of the frame, but I don’t see any noticeable wear. Frame has a fair amount of scuffing, and some minor paint loss. Appears consistent with age. Visible area of the print measures approximately 14 inches high x 9 inches wide. Frame measures approximately 19.75 inches high x 13.75 inches wide. If the item is not paid for within this time frame, an unpaid item case will be opened. More pictures available on request.
