Granted to your attention amazing original woodblock prints diptych ACTORS? PLAY by great artist RYUSAI? SHIGEHARU published in 1833. A member of the Utagawa school, he was one of a very select group of kamigata-e print artists who were able to support themselves solely as professional artists. Shigeharu was born Yamaguchi Yasuhide in Hizen Province, Nagasaki in 1802 (year 2 of Kyowa). He moved to the Mitsudera-machi???? District of Osaka around 1820, to study printmaking with his first mentor, Utagawa (Takigawa) Kunihiro???? His next teacher was Yanagawa Shigenobu???? , with whom he collaborated on several major projects. Some have suggested that Shigeharu also studied under master print designer Hokusai. Shigeharu published his first print in 1820 under the name Nagasaki Kunishige???? , acknowledging both his birthplace and his first teacher. He adopted the name Ryusai Shigeharu, which incorporated two characters from his second master’s name, in the spring of 1825. His artistic output is generally dated to the period c. This print is depicting the actor Arashi Rikan II as Oguri Hangan and Iwai Shijaku I as Princess Terute in play’Himekurabe Futaba Ezoshi’ in Osaka Naka theatre. Signed Gyokuryutei Shigeharu-ga with seal on the right panel of diptych. Publishers House: Tenmaya Kihei. Full oban size (14 1/2″ X 9 3/4″), unmounted, unframed. The colors are bright and unfaded. Originally published by Shippo Poetry Club. This print published in early Meiji period. Artist was born in Edo as Harunobu Sugavara around 1786. He was illegitimate son of the samurai who served under the Tokugawa shogunate. Gakutei’s mother later married to the man from Yashima klan what explaining the artist’s name. For some time he worked in Osaka focusing chiefly on privately commissioned woodblock prints called surimono, also worked as book illustrator. In addition to printmaking he wrote’kyoka’(comic poems), often illustrating these verses in his prints. Gakutei also known through out Japan as a writer. He translated and illustrated the 16th century Chinese novel’Jorney to the West’. This print is depicting the young beauty with’karako’ (Chinese Boy which often alludes to Hotei). Hotei is the God of Contentment and Happiness. Published in early Meiji period. Size (8 1/2″ X 7 1/2″), unmounted, unframed. The colors are bright and unfaded, embellished in gold and embossing. He was a student and adopted son of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, and also studied withOgata Gekk? . Gyo sometimes painted other subjects, for most of his career he made pictures of Japanesenoh theatre, either as large-scale paintings or colored woodblock prints. Some sets, such as N? Gaku zue, have been preserved as albums in their original bindings, including accordion-style bindings known as orihon, while other sets such as N? Ga taikan, were issued in sewn bindings known as yamato toji. Although most bound sets belong to institutional collections, individual prints by K?
