Looks very good, in “as found” original condition, very minor foxing, minor edge creases, not examined out of the frame, frame has minor wear–please look at photos carefully. Fantastic composition by Hasui Kawase! This image depicts a woman walking toward Gokoku Temple in Tokyo on a rainy spring day. Kawase’s impeccable skill and rich use of color is breathtaking. He was best known for his printmaking and Japanese landmark subjects. This is a gorgeous example of his work in great condition for its age. Kawase Hasui is considered one of the most important Japanese landscape artists of the 20th century. His prints, produced under the guidance and stern eye of his publisher, Watanabe Shozaburo, are the modern continuation of the unforgettable works by Hiroshige and Hokusai, the 19th-century masters of this genre. As none other, he could evoke Japan of the eventful interwar period. Hasui’s work enjoyed huge popularity from his very first print of 1918. In contrast to his illustrious 19th-century predecessors, his work was immediately successful in the rest of the world. His publisher, Watanabe Shozaburo, recognized the enormous potential of the American market, which resulted in Hasui’s prints fetching high prices at auctions in New York as early as the 1920s. After the Second World War, his prints were highly desired and sought after collectible items among the American occupying forces in Japan. Hasui’s work has always been greatly appreciated in Japan. 100% Guaranteed to be as described. Ask all questions beforehand. All Sales are Final. All sales are final. White squares are 1″ x 1″. 10 9/16 × 16 1/16 in. (26.83 × 40.8 cm) (sheet, horizontal ban). Hiroshi Yoshida (born Hiroshi Ueda) was born in the city of Kurume, Fukuoka, in Kyushu, on September 19, 1876. He showed an early aptitude for art fostered by his adoptive father, a teacher of painting in the public schools. At age 19 he was sent to Kyoto to study under Tamura Shoryu, a well known teacher of western style painting. He then studied under Koyama Shtar, in Tokyo, for another three years. In 1899, Yoshida had his first American exhibition at Detroit Museum of Art (now Detroit Institute of Art). He then traveled to Boston, Washington, D. In 1920, Yoshida presented his first woodcut at the Watanabe Print Workshop, organized by Watanabe Shzabur (18851962), publisher and advocate of the shin-hanga movement. However, Yoshida’s collaboration with Watanabe was short partly due to Watanabe’s shop burning down because of the Great Kanto earthquake on September 1, 1923. In 1925, he hired a group of professional carvers and printers, and established his own studio. Prints were made under his close supervision. Yoshida combined the ukiyo-e collaborative system with the ssaku-hanga principle of “artist’s prints”, and formed a third school, separating himself from the shin-hanga and ssaku-hanga movement.
