RARE VINTAGE LTD EDITION SIGNED JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT RAY MORIMURA. Hand Titled, Signed, Dated97 and Numbered 20 of ONLY 50 ever created in pencil by the Artist with the artists red seal in the bottom right margin. SIZE: 30.5cm x 30.5cm (16 inches x 12 inches). RAY MORIMURA was Born in Tokyo in 1948 and Graduated from Tokyo Gakugei University. By the Year 2000 his Work was much in Demand and he held a Solo Exhibition in the Following Year at Kanazawa, Ishikawa. In 2002 another Solo Exhibtion of his Work was Shown at the Azuma Gallery in Seattle which Consolidated International Demand for his Work and in the Following Years Regular Solo Shows in Tokyo Have Been Popular and Sell Out Events. Original first state 1952 print with 6mm Watanabe seal. There are two small spot near the upper center edge (see pics) maybe from printing or adhesive? Two small pinholes in upper left margin corner. Size: 10 -1/4 x 15 -1/4. Watanabe 6 mm Seal Hotei #284a pg. 433 – This is the “a” version which has quite a number of variations in the color palate then the regular state. Print has been properly stored flat in a print folio for the past 70 years. Watanabe print shop in the mid-1940′s and has always been properly stored away. Condition: Very fine, with full margins and MINT colors. Reverse is clean as well since this example has never been displayed! Has all the qualities of a first state impression with period paper, strong impression and dated provenance as well. There is a dark and light version of this print. This woodblock print depcts the. Sengakuji temple at night. And was first published in 1933 by Doi publishing house. Takanawa Sengakuji is a small temple near Shinagawa Station in Tokyo. The temple is famous for its graveyard where the “47 Ronin” (also known as Akoroshi, the “masterless samurai from Ako”) are buried. The story of the 47 loyal ronin remains one of the most popular historical stories in Japan, and many people visit the temple in order to pay respect to the Akoroshi by burning incense sticks (senko) in the graveyard. A small museum commemorating the 47 ronin can also be found at Sengakuji. On washi paper is signed with the Koitsu seal on the block and has no additional seals, indicating that it is likely a later 1950s edition by Doi Publishing. There is a price seal from 1950s on the back of the envelope. The print is in Horizontal Oban format with Image Size: 14.5″ x 10″. The print is attached to its original folder. Both paper and folder are old but appear in excellent condition. The print has full margins with sharp registry. There are no tears or repairs. Please review the pictures. Koitsu lived with Kiyochika for 19 years and was considered a member of Kiyochika’s family. He only became an internationally-known artist after his meeting with Watanabe Shozaburo, the founder of the Shin Hanga print movement, at an exhibition of Kiyochika’s works in 1931. In 1932, he started to produce landscape prints in the Shin Hanga style for Watanabe. Koitsu Tsuchiya became a leading Shin Hanga artist along with Kawase Hasui, Hiroshi Yoshida, and Shiro Kasamatsu. The Shin Hanga woodblock prints of Tsuchiya Koitsu are notable for their dramatic use of light and shadow. He later designed prints for various publishers including Doi, Kawaguchi, Baba Nobuhiko, and Takemura.
