Rare Original Japanese Woodblock Oban Giga Print Triptych – Yoshiiku – 1860 -Niskiki-e Giga (Drawn in Fun) Print -Title: Kane kinchaku ojime no zendama (Virtuous imps vying for the purse strings of a Nouveau-riche). Upper class beauties and Samurai at leisure, surrounded by evil spirits. The humanoid characters, dressed only in their underwear, incite violence and immorality, influencing the people around them. The people oblivious to their presence as the spirits climb on them, tugging at their sleeves and arms or sitting on their shoulders. Signed: Ikkeisai Yoshiiku giga (Drawn in fun); Publisher: Hirookaya Kôsuke; Size: 14 in. X 28 1/4 in. Condition: Excellent color and detail, excellent bleedthrough; three panels, not attached; slight paper remnants on each panel reverse, small holes and thinning at edges, repaired and blend well; light soil, creasing, all would be commensurate with age. Drama led to his production primarily of ukiyoe. Actor-prints, which are woodblock prints of kabuki actors and scenes from popular plays of the time. Tokio Miyashita Abstract Color Etching & Woodblock Listed Japanese Printmaker

Born in Tokyo, Miyashita studied woodcut under Un’ichi Hiratsuka in 1947 and intaglio under Jun’ichiro Sekino in 1950. He was a member of the Japan Print Society and Japan Copper Plate Artists Association. Among Miyashita’s innovations were the use of wire soldered on to the plate in order to achieve a hard contour line and the development of his own type of handmade paper. Miyashita exhibied internationally throughout the 1960s, and taught at the Tokyo University of Art and Education. Miyashita’s abstract work often combined intaglio and woodblock printmaking techniques, achieving a vibrant and dramatic effect. Miyashita’s work is in major collections worldwide including the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Museum of Art in Tokyo, the National Gallery of Canada, the San Francisco Fine Arts Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and many others. This print, titled “Horizon at Sunset, ” is an excellent example of Miyashita’s abstract style. Combining intaglio and woodblock techniques, it is signed lower right, titled on the lower edge, and numbered 18/50 lower left. It measures 15″ x 11 1/8″ (paper size). It is in good condition but with a pin hole on the upper edge center of the image (visible when held to the light). Please see my other auctions for more fine paintings and prints.
