Original Yoshitoshi Japanese Woodblock Print Cry of the Fox 100 Aspects of Moon
Author: adminJul 24
PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION. 100% Authentic Original Yoshitoshi (1839 – 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print. The Cry of the Fox. 100 Aspects of the Moon (Tsuki hyakushi). One Hundred Aspects of the Moon – Considered his masterwork, Yoshitoshi’s series One Hundred Aspects of the Moon features one hundred oban size woodblocks, published between 1885 and 1892. These quiet and reflective prints, beautifully composed and drawn, feature subjects from traditional Japanese and Chinese history and legend, rendered with great sensitivity and emotion. The moon appears in all but a few prints, providing a unifying motif for the series. Yoshitoshi’s innovative designs for the Moon series are often elegantly spare, with simple backgrounds that focus attention on the human figure. He combines the western influences of realism and perspective with qualities from traditional Japanese and Chinese painting, such as the emphasis on calligraphic brushstroke. The figures are carefully drawn with beautiful linework, conveying a real sense of individual character, gesture, and emotion. Special printing techniques such as embossing and burnishing add a sumptuous touch where appropriate, but simple subjects are conveyed in a likewise manner, no less carefully observed. Prints from the series were released singly or in groups every few months, with the final image completed shortly before Yoshitoshi’s death. Today, One Hundred Aspects of the Moon remains Yoshitoshi’s most well-known work, characterized by his artistry, compassion, and sensitivity in portraying the human experience. The Cry of the Fox – Foxes were magical creatures in ancient Japan. They weren’t evil, but were fond of practical jokes and it was best not to cross them. This print illustrates a tale where an old priest is transformed into a fox. Here the fox is appearing, still in the priest’s robes. Yoshitoshi’s design is wonderful. Every element has a symbolic meaning such as the seed-heads on the grasses drawn to look like foxfires. Foxfires are flames that hang in the air around foxes and other supernatural beings. This Yoshitoshi image is an incredible work of art and a woodblock masterpiece. This print shows the subtle gradation of color, fine embossed detail on the flowering susaki grass in soft natural tones used in the earliest printings of this fantastic image. Later printings were done in brighter inks with less or none of the blended color technique seen in our fine original. This wonderful print is a great choice for a collector looking for an excellent printing of Yoshitoshi’s Cry of the Fox. A rare opportunity to own this beautiful masterpiece in exquisite condition. Artist – Yoshitoshi (1839 – 1892). Image Size – 8 3/4″ x 13″ + margins as shown. Condition – Excellent overall condition for this 100% original antique print with excellent color and detail. Today, One Hundred Aspects of the Moon remains Yoshitoshi’s most well-known work, characterized by his artistry, compassion, and sensitivity in portraying the human experience. Musashi Plain Moon – In ancient Japan, the Musashi Plain was thought to be haunted by magical foxes that would gather on the New Year. In his famous final print of “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, ” Hiroshige depicted foxes gathering around a sacred pine on the edge of the Musashi Plain, small flames known as “foxfires” floating among them. Powerful magical abilities were often attributed to foxes. They were believed to be capable of taking on human appearance and mystically charming men. Often, unexplainable events were attributed to foxes. Here, a fox gazes into her reflection in the river behind her. The full moon rises behind and the underbrush is only visible in silhouette against the moonlit night sky. The night is full of possibilities for mischief and trickery for the fox. Evocative night scene with wonderful muted colors and subtle shading. This Yoshitoshi image is an incredible work of art and a woodblock masterpiece. Yoshitoshi’s Musashi Plain Moon is one of his finest works and highly sought after by collectors. If you’ve always wanted to own a Yoshitoshi masterpiece, this is an incredible piece! Kihei Sasajima Japanese Woodblock Print Abstract Sosaku Hanga
Author: adminJul 23
Ed 26/50, a small edition relatively, this famous artist was a member of the Sosaku Hanga and a student of Munakata and Hiratsuke. This group were in a way similar to our Arts & Crafts movement in that they believed in a return to handmade items and did their own carving and printing instead of having professional printers. So they tend to be rougher in some ways. This print is signed l/r K. It is in excellent condition, having original margins (20-1/2 x 14-1/4) and two tiny areas on the back margin of discoloration from tape once there. The item “Kihei Sasajima Japanese Woodblock Print Abstract Sosaku Hanga” is in sale since Friday, July 21, 2017. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”.
