Here we have an antique woodblock print by renowned Japanese artist Utagawa Toyokuni. This could be described as a Bijin-ga print, which is a general Japense term for art depicting beautiful women, landscapes, flowers, animals or erotica. This picture shows four Japanese women in beautifully decorated kimonos. Each woman appears to be intersted in the woman dressed in blue, who seems to be reading a scroll. The amazing colors and detail in the foreground and background of this print are truly breathtaking considering the age. Identifying marks on the front of this print are Toyokuni’s signature, as well as the censor seal, which is the circle next to Toyokuni’s signature, with peculiar markings in it. Other markings can be found on the back of the center print in red ink, and read Koz. Print comes framed in a black 3 panel wooden frame with wavy poured glass coverings; the glass having just a slight greenish tint. Print comes framed in a black 3 panel wooden frame with wavy poured glass coverings; the glass having a slightly greenish tint. Image is divided into 3 seperate pieces with a signature on each page, meaning it seems to have been the artist’s intention to have this piece divided up, likely for the printing press, or rice paper stock being of limited dimensions. Print presents nicely considering age, with a few slight discolorations and so forth near the edges, and two small holes of similar proportion in each of the three panels. Above and to the right of the subject’s exposed toe in the left panel, to the right of the subject’s head in. And, to the left of the subject’s head in the right pane. That these very small holes appear in much the same way on all three of the pages suggests that the holes were original to the manufacture, or were acquired while the paper stock or finished prints had for a time been stored leaf-over-leaf. MEASURES: Framed- 22″ x 18″ – Unframed – 16″ x 11″. PLEASE WAIT FOR INVOICE! Friends of Japanese woodblock prints know his beautiful print designs in pastel colors. But few know about his real passion. The first teacher of the young Tomikichiro was his grandfather. Later he entered the Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts with a two-year preparatory class and four years of regular training, and later a three year training at the Kyoto College of Art. He graduated from Kyoto College in 1923. While still at college, the young artist discovered his passion for. A movement that had spread from Tokyo to Kyoto. With the assistance of an old carver and an. Printer, Tomikichiro Tokuriki learned everything to master the complete process of design, carving and printing himself. Tokuriki was born in Kyoto, where he has always worked. The last of a long line of traditional-style painters, he turned early to woodblock prints and became a leader of the Kyoto’Sosaku Hanga’. He graduated from the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts and then from the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting in 1924. He was a member of Nihon Hanga Kyokai from 1932, and active in promoting’Sosaku Hanga’ in Kyoto. He was a co-founder of the Kyoto magazine’Taishu hanga’ in 1932, which helped create the sense of a local school of the Creative Print Movement much encouraged by Hiratsuka. He produced many sets of prints before and during the Pacific War based on traditional subjects, such as’Shin Kyoto fukei’ (‘New View of Kyoto’, 1933-4), which also included designs by Asada Benji q. And Asano Takeji b. 1900, and’Tokyo hakkei’ (‘Eight Views of Tokyo’, 1942). The item “Tokuriki Tomikichiro Japanese Wood Block Signed Chop Marked” is in sale since Sunday, March 26, 2017. A woman holds tightly to her wind blown umbrella as lightening bolts flash across the summer sky. Behind her a fisherman, carrying his net over his shoulder, seems unperturbed by the lightening flash. Takahashi Shotei was born in Tokyo with the given name of Takahashi Katsutaro. At a young age he was trained in Nihon-ga , the traditional Japanese painting style by his uncle Matsumoto Fuko, and beginning around 1907 Shotei started designing for the Watanabe Color Print Company. Shotei was among the first designers to be recruited into Watanabe’s stable of artists, which would later expand to include Goyo, Shinsui, Hasui, Kasamatsu, Koson and Koitsu among others. Many Watanabe prints were designed for export, primarily to North America, where the demand for all things Japanese was high in the early 20th century. By 1923 Shotei had produced nearly 500 designs for Watanabe, when Tokyo was hit by the Great Kanto earthquake — the worst recorded natural catastrophe in the history of Japan. The fires ignited by the earthquake raged for three days, and Watanabe’s print shop and all the woodblocks created by Shotei and the other early shin hanga artists, were destroyed. After the earthquake Shotei created another 250 prints mostly depicting scenic Japanese landscapes in the shin hanga style he had helped to define. He continued to work for Watanabe, but also worked with the publishers Fusui Gabo and Shobido Tanaka, where he had more control over the finished print than was possible with Watanabe.
