Printmaking, or “creative prints” printmaking established in Japan in the early 20th century. Like Modernism in the West, it was an art movement that broke away from rigid tradition and encouraged self-expression. Tokuriki learned the techniques of woodblock with the assistance of a master carver and printer, and joined the Hanga Association where he met other artists of the sosaku hanga movement such as Hiratsuka, Masao Maeda, Kihachiro Shimozawa and others. His work would run the gamut from Western-style Modernis to traditional imagery, with as much time spent on figurative works, erotic ex-libris, scenes from villages in Europe as well as Japanese imagery. To earn a living, Tokuriki also created. Japanese landscapes and popular scenes that appealed to tourists and wealthy collectors. Following World War II he established the Matsukyu Publishing Company, printing and publishing his own works as well as other sosaku and shin hanga artists. This helped secure his place in Kyoto as a leading contemporary printmaker and he soon exhibited throughout Japan and Europe, and in the 1960′s he opened several exhibitions of his artworks in major US cities Chicago, New York, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. In his hometown, Tokuriki lived in a 200 year-old house, where he had a large garden with cherry blossom trees. In his home he had a studio where he taught his students, and among them were students from overseas. Tomikichiro Tokuriki died in 2000. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, among others. This item is in the category “Art\Art Prints”. Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan, has been depicted in ukiyoe prints (Japanese Woodblock Prints), including Hiroshige Utagawa’s “Fuji Sanjurokkei” (“Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji”). Tokuriki was born into a family that worked at the Nishi Honganji Temple in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, and was mainly engaged in painting. However, influenced by the prints of Ei Kawanishi, he became a creative printmaker who played a role in the Kyoto creative printmaking movement. In 1945, at the end of the war, he established a printmaking research institute. However, he realized the limitations of self-printing and self-releasing creative prints, and worked on both creative prints and new prints made with the cooperation of printers and engravers. Tokuriki’s 36 Views of Mt. Fuji , produced around 1940, is characterized by its dynamic depiction of Mt. Fuji and its surroundings, whereas Hiroshige’s subjects were the suburbs of Edo and famous places with a view of Mt. This Rain at Kiraba (at the base of Mt Fuji). Is one of Tomikichiro’s 36 works in the 36 Views of Mt. Frame: 19.75″ x 15.25″ x 1. Print: 14.5″ x 10.25″. Please send us a message if you need to hold this. 1940 TOKURIKI TOMIKICHIRO Japanese Woodblock Prints Fuji from Kiyosato Station

1940 TOKURIKI TOMIKICHIRO Japanese Woodblock Prints Fuji from Kiyosato Station

34- Distant View of Fuji From Shinshu Kiyosato Station. From the series ; Thirty-six Views of Mt. Like the classic shin hanga masters of the day, Tokuriki designed many woodcuts of landscapes and city views in the traditional manner. Yet he actively promoted sosaku-hanga (creative prints) in Kyoto, which emphasized the artists participation in the entire process of printmaking and the exploration of more modern styles and trends. After WWII Tokuriki set up his own publishing company called Matsukyu and began to teach block-carving to artisans and artists, many of them foreigners. He also wrote extensively on the technique of woodblock carving and printing. He traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe and in the 1960s he opened several exhibitions of his works in major U. Cities such as, New York, Chicago, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. I’d rather do nothing but creative prints, but after all, I sell maybe ten of them against two hundred for a publisher-artisan print. The Lavenberg Collection of Japanese Prints. Print size : about 11.25 x 16.25 inches include margins. Please read before ordering.
