Vintage Japanese Woodblock Print Large Modernist Expressionism Hiroyuki Tajima
Author: adminMay 4
Print paper measures about 25″ x 19″, image size 22″ x 17″. Very light overall tanning, small wrinkle in paper bottom middle near addition numbers. Pencil signed and dated 1971, edition 5 of 50. There will be some tape residue on top margin from hinge mount. Born in Tokyo, Tajima graduated from Nippon University (1932) and in 1934 from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (Western Painting Faculty). He began his career. As a print artist in 1946 but gave it up temporarily in the 1950s to write. In the 1960s and 70s he developed his typical densely pigmented abstract style, which, however, was based on the ideals of East Asian calligraphy, traditional Japanese painting structure, and a sense of space derived partly from his Zen Buddhist beliefs. His abstract prints typically have complex surfaces achieved by building up the block with various materials such as crumpled paper. At this time he also made a living from producing more popular landscape prints under the name of Nagai Kiyoshi. In 1969 he began making prints on canvas using much the same techniques, but soon abandoned this. His prints were particularly promoted by the Red Lantern Shop in Kyoto and most of them can be found illustrated in their periodic English-language catalogues. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Cultures & Ethnicities\Asian\1900-Now\Japanese\Prints, Paintings & Posters”. The seller is “sward1087″ and is located in this country: US. A dark piece- difficult for me to photograph, sorry! Slight creases at the bottom of the piece, only affecting the signature area, not the area of printing. The matting seems professionally cut but the framing is amateurish. Hiroyuki Tajima 1968 Abstract Japanese woodblock print Twilight 50-4

Hiroyuki Tajima (Tajima Hiroyuki, 19111984) was a Japanese printmaker of the ssaku-hanga school. He was born in Tokyo and graduated from Nihon University in 1932. In 1943, he graduated from the Western-style painting division of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He also studied Nagase Yoshi (18911978), an artist of the Ssaku-hanga school. In 1963, he became a member of the Nihon Hanga Kyokai (Japanese Print Association). He is best known for his luminous abstract woodblock prints with broad areas of rich dense color. He was g reatly influenced by the methods and aesthetics of mid-century modernism while the spirit of his work is based on the ideals of East Asian calligraphy, traditional Japanese painting structure, and a sense of space derived partly from his Zen Buddhist beliefs. Tajimas dynamic colors and bold compositions and the the solemnity of balance and distillation of form resulted in works imbued with a sublime presence and meditative spirit. Tajima developed his own ink for his unique woodblock prints using powdered color mixed with the plastic medium phenol formaldehyde resin (Bakelite). This ink was extremely water-repellent with which Tajima created a primary pattern. He would then print the areas not printed by the special resin infused ink with a water-based ink or dye. This layering of the water-based and water resistant inks was Tajimas unique signature style. Measures as framed approx. 32.5″ x 25.5″ (note that there is no glass) Measurements of inner mat opening: 24.5″ x18.5″. Title: “Twilight” written in English & Japanese. Signature: Signed in Pencil Lower Right. Beautiful framed and matted woodblock print in very good condition! Please feel free to as any questions.
