Masterpiece of Ito Shinsui’s Hanging Scroll. This stunning woodblock print, titled. Is a masterpiece by the celebrated Japanese artist Ito Shinsui, known for his iconic. This exceptional work is a collaboration with two master artisans, both designated as “Preservers of Important Folk Cultural Properties” : Horishi (carver) Okura Hanbei and Surishi (printer) Nakajo Kineo. Their skillful craftsmanship is acknowledged by their signatures on the inside lid of the box (please note, the signature on the front is not Shinsui’s). The print showcases exquisite gradations of color and subtle shading, both challenging feats in traditional woodblock printing. Though printed on thick, high-quality washi paper typically used for hanging scrolls, this work does not have the common embossed texture found in thinner prints. However, you can feel the fine indents of the lines and color blocks by gently touching the surface. The reverse of the print shows some minor staining due to age, but overall the piece remains in excellent condition. Scroll Size: Approximately 51.6″ x 25.4″ (131.2cm x 64.5cm). Print Size: Approximately 15.1″ x 17.9″ (38.3cm x 45.5cm). Please note that due to the age and previous display of this item, there may be some wear, including slight soiling and creases. Ito Shinsui Original JAPANESE Woodblock Print Beauty & Clock 1964
Author: adminJun 22
Japanese Woodblock Print “Beauty & Clock”. By Ito Shinsui (1898 – 1972). His family initially enjoyed the economic benefits of the Sino-Japanese War boom, but while he was in elementary school, their fortunes changed and Shinsui had to leave school to work, first at a sign shop and then as a factory hand at the Tokyo Printing Company. Kiyokata is credited with elevating the traditional ukiyo-e genre to a legitimate category of modern nihonga painting. On taking the aspiring young painter (Hajime) under his wing, Kiyokata have him the art name Shinsui. In 1916 Shinsui’s talents attracted the attention of Watanabe Shozaburo when the shin hanga publisher saw the artist’s painting’Before the Mirror’. With Kiyokata’s consent Watanabe persuaded the young artist to begin to design works for him to produce as woodblocks, of which a version of’Before the Mirror’ was the first in July 1916. From that time until Watanabe’s death in 1962 Watanabe and Shinsui collaborated on over sixty landscape prints and about 100 others, mostly of beautiful women (bijinga). Shinsui occasionally worked for other publishers even before 1962. His series’Eight Views of Lake Biwa’ set standards for the landscape print which were taken up by Yoshida Hiroshi and by another Kiyokata pupil, Kawase Hasui. Once Hasui had specialized in landscape, Shinsui confined himself more to’bijinga’ in prints, and increasingly in paintings, which always occupied most of his time, especially after 1927, when he founded his own academy of painting, the Shinsui Gakujuku (Shinsui Academy); this was moved in 1930 and renamed Roho Gakujuku (Academy of the Clear Peak) and attracted many pupils, engendering another generation of’Nihonga’ artists specialising in’bijinga’. Today Shinsui is recognized as the greatest’bijinga’ artist of the 20th century shin hanga style. Please read before ordering. WB Shinsui Ito Japanese Woodblock Prints Asian Antique Ukiyo-e Kimono Kanzashi
Author: adminAug 24
Artist Name ITO Shinsui. Dimensions Overall size: H49.0cm x W37.9cm. Print size: H45.4cm x W35.4cm. Remarks Watanabe seal 6mm. This is a work by Ito Shinsui, who was said to be the “last beauty painter” in the traditional Ukiyoe tradition of the Utagawa school. Shinsui also painted a work called “Spring Evening” with a composition almost identical to this “Whispering”. He also painted it many times with different hair ornaments and kimono patterns, and it seems to be the composition that he preferred. The scene in which the two women are whispering to each other, not only in a cute but also in a slightly mischievous manner, has the glamorous quality that is typical of Shinsui. The carefully rendered details of the ornamental hairpins and kimono patterns are a highlight of the work, but the emotions that can be drawn from their gazes at each other are also interesting. The background of the painting is decorated with a technique called “mica-zuri” (mica print). This is a technique familiar from the ukiyo-e paintings of Utamaro Kitagawa and Sharaku Toshusai, in which glittering mica or seashell powder is used. The result is a beautiful pearl-like luster on the surface of the finished paper, giving it a luxurious finish. Born in Tokyo, Japan.
