This listing is for a vintage signed Tamami Shima woodblock print. It is signed in pencil to the lower edge. It is # 41 of an edition of 100. The paper measures 23 inches X 17 inches. This print was framed with matte glass, so the colors and contrast are vibrant and strong. There is light yellowing at the edges where the paper was under cardboard, visible in the photos. Pencil numbered, titled (in Japanese), dated and signed. Sight size is 15″ x 20 3/4″. Frame measures 23 1/2″ x 28 1/2″. Bottom corners/edges have chipped frame. She was born in 1937 and died in 1999. Japanese Original Woodblock Print Blue Bird by Tamami Shima

It is titled “Blue Bird, ” and is about 11 1/4 inches high, and 16 1/4 inches wide. The artist’s signature is written in pencil on the right side of the bottom border. On the left side of the bottom border is the edition number (85/100), title in Japanese, and the year (1961). The print is attached by two tape “hinges” on the upper back border of the print. As can be seen in the photos, there is some toning and mat burn present. Also the reverse side of the print (see photo) has a darkened edge, and the evidence of inks that have come through the paper and left their marks. There is a tiny “pinhole” that is visible when the print is held up to the light. It is located in a straight line down from the bird’s eye, and just under about one third from the bottom of the image, within a brown rectangular area. Nonetheless, it is not discernible when normally viewed (although evident under a magnifier). The colors remain strong and vibrant. Overall this print is in excellent vintage condition! Shima is one of the featured artists in the book “The Modern Japanese Print: An Appreciation”. Her works are also represented worldwide in many collections, both private and public, including the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Harvard University Art Museums, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Just out of a local house is this fine Japanese woodblock by the artist Shima Tamami b. She graduated in 1958 from the Women’s College of Fine Arts. She received a travel grant from the College Women’s Association of Japan in 1962. She is noted for her woodblock prints of rhythmic fanciful birds she produced in the 1960′s. This print is from a limited edition of 100 done in 1961. It is numbered 96/100. The print depicts a fanciful, colorful, abstract representation of a rooster. With its original black bamboo style frame it measures about 21 3/4 inches high and about 15 5/8 inches wide. The double matted image alone measures 15 inches high and about 9 7/8 inches wide. The woodblock is signed and numbered in the lower margin. It is in excellent condition. See photos as they are part of the description.
