Toshi Yoshida Woodblock Tenryu River

Toshi Yoshida Woodblock Tenryu River

This design was originally published in 1942 by the Yoshida Hanga Studio. We are offering a posthumously printed image, made from the original blocks, and acquired directly from the Yoshida family. While it is signed in the block, it still looks like it is pencil signed to an untrained eye. To avoid any misunderstanding, the Yoshida Hanga Studio also included the seal of the printer on the reverse. The image measures 9 5/8 x 6 7/8 inches, plus full margins. The condition is excellent. Up until his father passed away in 1950, Toshi Yoshida primarily produced works that were reminiscent of his father’s landscape prints. His later works include a wide assortment of subjects, styles and techniques. Don’t settle for a giclee or other mechanical reproduction. These woodblock prints are made using the same printing process as the original pencil signed run, under the supervision of the artist’s family and meeting their exacting standards. Kawase Hasui ORIGINAL JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT 1920 The Asano River in Kanazawa

The Asano River in Kanazawa (Pre-Earthquake). Original Japanese Woodblock Print. Souvenirs of Travel, First Series. Watanabe Color Print Co. 10 -1/4 x 15 -1/2. Very fine, with superb colors. Notes: Series seal, left margin. Watanabe 6 mm seal, lower right. A stunning example, retaining all the original colors. Hasui commented: Someone once said that Kanazawa is the’Kyoto of the North’. In that sense I truly believe that Kanazawa has a good feel about it. I depicted Asano river and the Ume bridge enveloped in a heavy mist on a morning in early autumn. It was difficult technically to convey the mood of the row of pines and the distant wood, as well as the area where the mist drifts down towards the river-bank. Hasui began working on this (Souvenirs of Travel) series in the summer of 1919, and it was completed in the autumn of the following year. Each of the sixteen images of Souvenirs was based on the sketches that Hasui had made during his travels from Sendai to Kanazawa. Hasui apparently enjoyed traveling, particularly when unplanned, and during his lifetime he journeyed extensively throughout Japan. Compared with his first landscapes of Shiobara, this work shows a refinement in Hasui’s style, particularly in the use of a more delicate line and a strengthening of the lyrical quality. While Hasui is no doubt indebted to the Ukiyo-e tradition of landscape prints as seen in the works by print designers such as Utagawa Hiroshige, Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Hasui has nevertheless developed his own style in the treatment of the overall composition and in the color harmonies. As a result, this series marked an important point in Hasui’s evolution as a landscape artist. The New Wave; pg. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”. “House on the River”, by Shotei. This is a crepe version and is an antique frame. Please see photos for detailed condition. Frame shows wear commensurate with age. Japanese Woodblock Print, Takahashi Shotei also called Hiroaki. A rare copy of a beautiful possibly pre-earthquake? Small print (4″ x 8 1/2″ inches) with very narrow margins. Japanese print 8 1/2″ x 4″. Frame 11 5/8″ 6 7/8″. At a young age he was trained in Nihon-ga, the traditional Japanese painting style by his uncle Matsumoto Fuko, and beginning around 1907 Shotei started designing for the Watanabe Color Print Company. Shotei was among the first designers to be recruited into Watanabe’s stable of artists, which would later expand to include Goyo, Shinsui, Hasui, Kasamatsu, Koson and Koitsu among others. The fires ignited by the earthquake raged for three days, and Watanabe’s print shop and all the woodblocks created by Shotei and the other early shin hanga artists, were destroyed. After the earthquake Shotei created another 250 prints mostly depicting scenic Japanese landscapes in the shin hanga style he had helped to define. He continued to work for Watanabe, but also worked with the publishers Fusui Gabo and Shobido Tanaka, where he had more control over the finished print than was possible with Watanabe. Shotei used a variety of names, signatures and seals during his lifetime. From 1907 until 1922 he used the name Shotei, and after 1922 Hiroaki and Komei.
