Japanese Woodblock Print by Kawase Hasui Zensetsu-ji Temple in Rain
Author: adminAug 6
Kawase is one of the forefathers of the shin hanga printing movement in the 1920′s -1960′s. In 1956, Kawase was named a living national treasure of Japan. This woodblock print is the well known “Zensetsu-ji Temple in Rain” This print was originally from 1936. It is an incredible piece, with strong colors and a tremendously beautiful scene. Kawase’s prints are among the rarest shin hanga prints available, as many of his blocks were destroyed or unusable. If you collect woodblocks and you don’t have one by Kawase, then your collection is simply not complete. Condition: There are three very noticeable issues with this print. First, the upper and lower margins have been slightly trimmed (about 1.5 inches) by a prior owner, presumably to fit a frame. It still presents very well and with some smart matting, it should not be noticeable when framed. Second, there is some minor tape residue at the upper right corner. Finally, the upper left corner has been repaired with tape (appears to have been slightly ripped). Otherwise, only minor toning. Measurements: Print measures approximately 14 inches high x 10.5 inches wide. If the item is not paid for within this time frame, an unpaid item case will be opened. More pictures available on request. Please note that this item is not accompanied by a certificate of authenticity or any other source verifying its authenticity.
