Taj-Mahal Night No2 10 7/8 x 16 Japanese woodblockprint. Pencil title in English lower left. Signed in pencil Hiroshi Yoshida lower right. Jizuri Seal , mid left. Yoshida Hiroshi, September19, 1876 April 5, 1950 20th-century Japanese painter and woodblockprintmaker. He was known for his images of non-Japanese subjects done intraditional Japanese wood block style. In 1931 Yoshida made a series of his prints depicting scenes from India. Prints created by Hiroshi Yoshida with special care bear a jizuri seal (meaning Self Printed) mark at the left margin. According to research, print is dated to 1932 and usually referred to as “Izumi Bridge in Rain” or Night Shower on Izumi Bridge. A beautiful composition of two figures running across a wooden bridge. Both are holding umbrellas, one of which is barefoot whilst carrying a paper lantern. Hallmarks: Piece is signed along left side center edge. Reverse side of woodblock is stamped Made in Japan. Dimensions: Mat Length 17 3/4″ x Height 9 7/8″. Visible Image Length 14 1/2″ x Height 6 1/4″. Print Length 15 1/8″ x Height 6 3/4″. Condition: Great vintage condition with very minor wear to print. Minor soiling to mat. Colors are strong and vivid. Print is not adhered to backing. SHOTEI’S STAMP IS ON THE LEFT MIDDLE BUT DUE TO THE CREPE PROCESS AND THE DARK COLORING IT DID NOT SCAN WELL. THIS IS ONE OF SHOTEI’S MOST PRIZED IMAGES. IMPRESSION AND COLOR ARE VERY FINE. CORNERS ARE FRAYED AND THERE IS A PINHOLE IN LOWER LEFT CORNER. Print measures: 12.2 x 5.6 inches. There is a glass front to the frame. This print with the frame weighs 3.8 pounds and measures 18 and 3/4″ wide by 15 and 1/2″ tall by 1 and 1/4 thick. This woodblock print is in very good condition with no rips, tears, or repairs. The wood frame has some minor wear. Please view all my photographs for further details.
