This image is, in my view, the best from that series. The color woodblock measures 15 1/2 inches by 10 1/4 inches (image size), and is printed on a full sheet measuring a total of 16 3/4 inches by 11 1/4 inches. The print is signed in pencil by Saito at the left of the image, where there is also a red chop mark. The print is not laid down, and the image retains its fresh and vivid colors. The only condition issues I can find are a tiny 1/8 inch tear at the left margin (not entering the image) and some paper residue (from an earlier matting) around the edges of the sheet, where the mat was glued down. The mat residue just enters into the edges of the image in several places, mostly at the bottom (see photos 10 and 11). This woodblock print (from a limited edition of 250) is from The Second Collection of Modern Beauties (Gendai bijin shu dai-nishu). It is entitled Maiko girl. It was published by Watanabe with a date of July 12, 1932. It is signed and dated on the upper left. It has the Watanabe publisher seal on the lower left. The limited edition seal is on the verso. The paper measures 17″ x 11″. Framed dimensions are 24 7/16″ x 17 3/4″. There is also a “Shinsui” signature on the backing board, but we suspect this was added by the framer. Again, the condition on this piece is remarkable. Please read condition report and see photos. Before purchasing our item, please read and understand our business policy and business approach below. We collect and sell valuable items which we confidently recommend at fair prices. One exception to it would be when customers take items without written statements of guarantee to publically qualified appraisal authorities and when they are clarified as forgeries by them (not based on customers’ own opinions or by third parties they choose). Thank you very much for your kind understanding. The young Junichiro grew up in Aomori City together with Munakata Shiko. Munakata, who should late become the “Japanese Picasso”, might have been the one who had inflamed the enthusiasm of the young Sekino for drawing and painting. From an early age on Sekino studied printmaking and oil painting. In 1936 he even won a prize at Bunten for an etching. Bunten was part of the official government controlled art scene with juries who decided on the admission of artworks. Being accepted to these official exhibitions, was quite some success. And winning a prize was an even more remarkable achievement by the young artist. In 1939 Sekino moved to Tokyo. He met and studied under Onchi Koshiro, the great mentor of the sosaku hanga art movement. During his art training Sekino had learned both, the Japanese woodblock method and Western techniques like etching. Although he had attended art training, Sekino was basically self-taught. His great paragons were the old Japanese and European masters – Sharaku, Hiroshige and Toulouse Lautrec, Rembrandt and especially Albrecht Dürer. Material = Paper(glass in frame) Condition= Normal. The following biography is from Castle Fine Arts. Born in Fukushima prefecture, Kiyoshi Saito began by designing signs for store fronts in 1924 and developed his work into a successful business. His love of art inspired him to sell his business and move to Tokyo in 1932. There he studied Western-style painting at the Hongo Painting Institute. While exhibiting his oils, he began making woodblock prints by cutting and printing progressively from a single block. By 1937 he focused solely on making woodblock prints and in 1938 he produced the Winter in Aizu series depicting the area where he lived as a child. In 1943, he met Onchi, which led to membership in the Nihon Hanga Kyokai (Japanese Woodblock Association). At the end of the war he exhibited with Un-ichi Hiratsuka and Hide Kawanishe in Tokyo. In 1948, Saito exhibited at the Salon Printemps, and in 1951 received first prize for Steady Gaze at the inaugural Sao Paolo Bienniale. This event brought the modern school of Japanese prints to prominence. Saito was featured in Statler’s, Modern Japanese Print: An Art Reborn (1956), and visited the U. In 1956 under the auspices of the State Department and the Asia Foundation. From that year onward, Saito exhibited widely throughout the U. In 1967 he made a woodblock print of Prime Minister Eisaku Sato for the cover of Time Magazine. Saito died in 1997 at the conclusion of a major retrospective in Tokyo at the Wako Department Store. Kiyoshi Saito works are in numerous collections including the Cincinnati Art Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art; Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts, San Francisco; New York Public Library; Art Institute of Chicago; Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art; Kanagawa Prefectural Museum. It is signed below the seal and numbered (4) lower right. It measures 16 5/8″ x 11 3/8″ (paper size). It is in good condition with yellowing at the edge of the paper.
