Date : 3rd year of Ansei. Detail: Binding hole / Slight soiling / Repair of a few foxing marks. The “Kodaraiya Gouketsu Tan” is an illustrated novel published from the 10th year of the Tempo Period. The character “Kodaraiya” was a fictional bandit and ninja who appeared in a late-Edo Period yomihon (a book read in the late Edo Period), and his activities as a magician who wields an echidna became the subject of many works as well as stories. Later, Tsunade, who wielded slugs, and his arch-enemy, Daijamaru, who wielded snakes at will, also appeared, and the story unfolded as a three-way struggle. Odori katagata gaitama jutaku is a series of kabuki plays depicting scenes from the past up to the time of their production. It is characterized by a vertical composition of a horizontal stage, and depicts many tall performances, such as staircases and midair rides. For performances that do not feature many tall staging, the composition is as if looking down from above, as if the viewer is looking down from the audience seats. One can see the author’s determination to convey the charm of the kabuki stage itself. Toyokuni III was a student of Toyokuni, who first took the name Kunisada, and in 1882 took the name Toyokuni II. In fact, Toyokuni II had already been succeeded by Toyoshige, but Toyokuni III took the name of Toyokuni II at that time, perhaps with the intention of making himself more suitable. Today, Toyokuni is treated as Toyokuni III for the sake of distinction. Toyokuni had a long period of painting, and it is thought that he produced more than 10,000 works. He was especially known for his depictions of people, including portraits of actors and beautiful women, and the number of his works and his vigor suggest that he dominated the Edo Ukiyoe world.

WB Shinsui Ito Japanese Woodblock Prints Asian Antique Ukiyo-e Kimono Kanzashi
Author: adminAug 24
Artist Name ITO Shinsui. Dimensions Overall size: H49.0cm x W37.9cm. Print size: H45.4cm x W35.4cm. Remarks Watanabe seal 6mm. This is a work by Ito Shinsui, who was said to be the “last beauty painter” in the traditional Ukiyoe tradition of the Utagawa school. Shinsui also painted a work called “Spring Evening” with a composition almost identical to this “Whispering”. He also painted it many times with different hair ornaments and kimono patterns, and it seems to be the composition that he preferred. The scene in which the two women are whispering to each other, not only in a cute but also in a slightly mischievous manner, has the glamorous quality that is typical of Shinsui. The carefully rendered details of the ornamental hairpins and kimono patterns are a highlight of the work, but the emotions that can be drawn from their gazes at each other are also interesting. The background of the painting is decorated with a technique called “mica-zuri” (mica print). This is a technique familiar from the ukiyo-e paintings of Utamaro Kitagawa and Sharaku Toshusai, in which glittering mica or seashell powder is used. The result is a beautiful pearl-like luster on the surface of the finished paper, giving it a luxurious finish. Born in Tokyo, Japan.

Japanese Woodblock Print Book Shin-bijutsukai vol. 4 Kimono Modern Design

Formal Name:Shin-bijutsukai vol, 4. Author: Furuya korin(Supervision: Kamisaka sekka). Contents: 20 pages of woodcut color illustrations. Size: 24.1×16.4cm(9.5×6.5inch). Year of publication: 19021910. Condition: There is a light stain on the front cover, a stain on the back cover, rubbing to the corners and some dulling to the margins of the text. Shin-bijutsukai is a collection of beautifully colored designs that fuses traditional Japanese designs with modern Western designs. It features a dynamic and innovative design with motifs of animals, plants and natural sculptures. Born in Kaizu, Shiga Prefecture in 1875, Korin studied with Suzuki Mannen, Kamisaka Sekka and Asai Chu. He won the painting category of the Shinko Bijutsu Tenrankai (Exhibition of New and Old Art) in 1897. He taught at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts from 1905, being appointed an assistant professor before his death in 1910. Among his works are popular illustrated books in the Rinpa tradition. Korin Patterns (Korin moyo) (1907), a two-volume, ink-on-paper work originally conceived as a sample book for the kimono industry, became popular with people interested in fashion. Carpenter of the Metropolitan Museum of Art describes the book as “impressive”. It contains images based on wave patterns as well as the traditional boatman in a skiff. Other works published by Yamada Unsodo include several orihon (concertina-type binding) books with patterns based on flowers and plants (1905), pine trees (1905) and bamboo (1907). His works are held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. (These are from wikipedia). This item is not new.
