WB Toyokuni? Japanese Woodblock Prints Kabuki Samurai Poem 1847-52s

Date : Koka 4 – Kaei 5. Detail: some stains / repair a small insect hole / ink writing (actor’s name). This series combines popular actors of the time with haiku, but since actor pictures were forbidden at the time on the grounds that they were disruptive to public morals, they were ostensibly not considered actors. The names of the actors were written on this work by a past owner. It is an even more interesting piece when one looks at the circumstances of the time. Toyokuni III was a student of Toyokuni and called himself Kunisada. He was named Toyokuni 2nd in Tempo 15. In reality, Toyokuni III was Toyokuni III. He had a long period of painting, and the quantity of his works is enormous. He was especially well known for his depictions of people, such as actors and beauties, and had the vigor and power to take the Ukiyo-e world by storm at the time. UTAGAWA SADAFUSA FRAMED UKIYO-E JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT KABUKI ACTOR AS SAMURAI. Up for sale is a wonderful antique Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Sadafusa circa 1835. The original print is in it’s original frame from 1977 and has it’s original matting, glass, and bamboo style frame. Overall, it is 19 1/2″ long x 15 1/4″ long and the print is approximately 14″ x 10″. The print has muted colors and there are surface creasing and some spotting. Obviously, it has not been taken out of it’s original frame and I don’t know if the print is trimmed on the margins or if it’s glued to matte. As far as I can tell, the print is not dry mounted and probably only affixed on the edges of the print. The frame is in good condition but the matte does have foxing along it’s edge. As restrictions continue, I may only be able to drop packages off and not have them physically scanned into the postal system. My post office is understaffed and sometimes they fail to scan packages although they have them in their possession. If you require an upgrade to priority, please let me know before paying. _gsrx_vers_1436 GS 9.0.5 (1436). This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”.
