Original Utagawa Kuniyoshi Tsukuda Island Japanese Woodblock Framed Circa 1920s Reprint. This is a lovely antique original 1920s reprint of a Utagawa Kuniyoshi woodblock titled Tsukuda Island from the 19th century, of the Tsuduka Island from the Series “famous places in the eastern capital”. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798- 1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He was a member of the Utagawa school. The range of Kuniyoshi’s subjects included many genres: landscapes, women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of legendary samurai heroes. His artwork incorporated aspects of Western representation in landscape painting and caricature. Mild fading, minor creasing and rubbing commensurate with age and use. Framed under glass with in fine black and gold wood frame. Frame is loose upon touch. Measurements: framed: 16 1/2 x 18 3/4 x 1 inches; 9 1/2 x 14. Weight: 3 lbs 9 oz. Artist Name KAWASE Hasui. Dimensions Overall size: H26.5cm x W40.2cm. Print size: H23.7cm x W36.1cm. Remarks There is a stain on the print. This is one of a series of works titled “Nihon Keikan Shu Higashinihon Hen” (Japanese Landscapes of Eastern Japan) produced by Kawase Tomoe Sui in 1933. It depicts Futakojima Island in Matsushima, known as one of the Three Great Views of Japan. The twin islands are placed in the foreground, and the horizon line and heavy clouds hovering above it are depicted in the background, with the shining moon peeking out from between the clouds. The moonlight illuminates the blue, and you can almost feel the coolness and stillness of the air. This is a reprint, but it is in excellent condition and the colors of the print are beautiful, so it is recommended as a gift. Born in Tokyo, Japan.

Watanabe red square “Gift” Seal (used on early prints created as gifts or private publication). 440 Print has been properly stored flat in a print folio for the past 70 years. Watanabe print shop in the mid-1940′s and has always been properly stored away. Condition: Very fine, with full margins and MINT colors. Has all the qualities of a first state impression with period paper, strong impression and dated provenance as well. A superb composition of the unusually shaped rock at Zaimoku island, together with the image of a sail-boat, the silhouettes of the distant islands and clouds. Hasui once wrote regarding the print: Matsushima is one of the celebrated’three views in Japan’… This work illustrates a boat with white sail moving behind Zaimoku island, and it depicts the scene one late autumn afternoon.
